A Bend in the Road
Fall in love with this small-town love story about a widower sheriff and a divorced schoolteacher searching for second chances-only to be threatened by long-held secrets of the past.
Miles Ryan's life seemed to end the day his wife was killed in a hit-and-run accident two years ago. As deputy sheriff of New Bern, North Carolina, he not only grieves for her and worries about their young son, Jonah, but longs to bring the unknown driver to justice.
Then Miles meets Sarah Andrews, Jonah's second-grade teacher. A young woman recovering from a difficult divorce, Sarah moved to New Bern hoping to start over. Tentatively, Miles and Sarah reach out to one another . . . and soon are falling in love.
But what neither realizes is that they are also bound together by a shocking secret, one that will force them to reexamine everything they believe-including their love.

I really liked Safe Haven by Sparks. 100% would recommend that one. This book, however, was a waste of my time. Like watching a hallmark movie. All the characters were emotionally immature and certain things did not make sense.

Miles, a county deputy sheriff, lived in a small southern town. Married to his high school sweetheart, Missy, they lived a typical small town life. Missy was a stay-at-home Mom to their son Jonah. Missy was an avid runner and one evening finishing her run after dark, she was hit and killed by a hit-and-run driver. A thorough investigation turned up no leads. Miles had to assume both Mom and Dad roles for young Jonah who was tormented by recurring nightmares. The towns people felt much pity for their beloved deputy and his motherless son. so much so, that his teachers didn't press Jonah to fully learn his grade level but just promoted him to the next grade. Enter Miss Sarah Andrews, a new teacher who hailed from Baltimore, who was escaping from the heartache of a unexpected divorce. Miss Andrews was appalled that Jonah couldn't do the grade work and sent a note home to Miles requesting he come to talk with her. Miss Andrews having little to do said that she would tutor Jonah and help him get current with his work. A good relationship formed between Miss Andrews and Jonah, and eventually included Miles who became interested in dating her. They became a couple, Sarah inviting Miles to her parents home for Thanksgiving. Her parents lived in the same area and her college freshman brother was there also. During the months leading up to Thanksgiving, Miles had been still trying to locate Missy's killer, and was seriously hounding a hard drinking, kinda trouble maker. Miles was always taking the investigation to levels unheard of and not with the blessing of Charlie, the Sheriff and his boss. There are numerous twists and turns and unexpected events occurring to put suspense in the story. This is a good read.

3.75 Stars October Book Club Book Review I have mixed emotions about this book, I liked it but I didn't love it. Since reading "Dear John" I have stayed away from Nicholas Sparks books. I enjoy watching the movies but the books just aren't for me. However, I didn't have a choice with this one, since it was a book club read. I'm glad I read it though it was a quick and easy read. It won't be at the top of my recommendation list but as a Nicholas Sparks book goes I would chose this one over others. One thing I found interesting was the writing style. Sparks starts the novel off with the narrator recalling how events of his life intertwine with those of the hero and heroine. By doing this the reader is able to feel sympathy for the narrator while he retells the story of how Miles and Sarah learn to love again after tragic events uproot both of their lives. Miles Ryan is a small town county sheriff with a 7 year old son, Jonah. Miles and Jonah's lives were turned upside down 2 years prior when tragedy strikes and Miles and Jonah bury a wife and mother. Miles is left with no answers and no one to charge for the crime that was committed. After years of obsession he finds himself looking ahead and wanting to rebuild a life. One with love, and happiness, one with a wife. Sarah Andrews has just moved to New Bern after leaving her hometown of Baltimore to be closer to her parents after a nasty divorce. She isn't looking for love considering she had been burned deeply by her ex-husband. But when a student in her class is in need of extra help she meets Deputy Ryan and sparks fly. Neither one of them expected for their feelings to come so fast and so hard, and when a secret is revealed that could rip apart the very love story they created, forgiveness and understanding may be their only hope.
