A Solitude of Wolverines: A Novel of Suspense (Alex Carter Series, 1)

"Both a mystery and a survival story, here is a novel written with a naturalist's eye for detail and an unrelenting pace. It reminded me of the best of Nevada Barr." -James Rollins, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Last Odyssey

The first book in a thrilling series featuring an intrepid wildlife biologist who's dedicated to saving endangered species...and relies on her superior survival skills to thwart those who aim to stop her.

While studying wolverines on a wildlife sanctuary in Montana, biologist Alex Carter is run off the road and threatened by locals determined to force her off the land.

Undeterred in her mission to help save this threatened species, Alex tracks wolverines on foot and by cameras positioned in remote regions of the preserve. But when she reviews the photos, she discovers disturbing images of an animal of a different kind: a severely injured man seemingly lost and wandering in the wilds.

After searches for the unknown man come up empty, local law enforcement is strangely set on dismissing the case altogether, raising Alex's suspicions. Then another invasive predator trespasses onto the preserve. The hunter turns out to be another human-and the prey is the wildlife biologist herself. Alex realizes too late that she has seen too much-she's stumbled onto a far-reaching illegal operation and now has become the biggest threat.

In this wild and dangerous landscape, Alex's life depends on staying one step ahead-using all she knows about the animal world and what it takes to win the brutal battle for survival.

Editorial Reviews

"What a treat! Alice Henderson has delivered a treasure of a novel-and, to readers' delight, a promise of more where this came from. Her depiction of the natural world in all its beauty and terror is spot-on. Into this she weaves a cast of characters both original and fascinating, as well as a heroine who does the unbelievable, yet one can believe it. A great read!"

If someone had told me the whole premise of the main character biologist, vegetarian out to save the world, I would have never opened the book. But it works , I live in the sticks lots of trees like meat. Alex sounded too good to be true but it works and she grew on me good book. My German shepherds would probably like her top.

What a great read once you start reading this book you just have to finish it great story lines you have got to read this book well worth a 10 out of 10 book
A cozy readerD.Woodw
Preachy and really stretched the believability factor. I liked it in the beginning but then it just got too odd. And, I am sorry, but reading intricate details of 4 forest walks a day while setting up cameras got dull. I would pay no more than $2.99 to read this.

First thing, wait for the book to come in paperback as the book is pricey given the amt. of pages- 304. While the book is interesting from the perspective of wildlife conservation (you will learn quite a bit of the effort involved in tracking & counting wildlife) the heroine is definitely a liberal, vegetarian loving, climate change embracing activist. Overall it’s decent & suspenseful but the ending leaves you totally up in the air which for me was unsatisfactory.

I was hooked from the opening sentence about ‘when the shooting started’ but really loved this book for two reasons. First, the insights into what it’s like both technically and socially to be a field biologist. Second, the portrayal of the relationship between Alex and her ex-boyfriend. The setting was also fantastic and the plot well crafted. Alex’s interactions with the small town locals on her post are fantastic and reminded me of my experiences (I am not a biologist) camping in similar parts of the USA. The mix of open hostility and frank sexism mixed in with small town friendliness was so well portrayed! I was also fascinated by the descriptions of how and were to set up camera traps and the behaviour of the wolverines. Alex herself is a smart, ambitious, woman with intentions to be a force for good in the world. Her relationships with those close to her who do not necessarily share her goals are well written. Especially well developed is the clash between Alex’s expectations for her life, and the expectations of those around her who feel she should play a more limited ‘womanly’ role both in their lives, and in the world. It was a really quick, and enjoyable read!
