Bag of Bones: A Novel

A powerful tale of grief, love's enduring bonds, and secrets of the past from #1 New York Times bestselling author and master storyteller Stephen King.

Four years after the sudden death of his wife, bestselling novelist Mike Noonan is still grieving. Unable to write and plagued by vivid nightmares set at the western Maine summerhouse he calls "Sara Laughs," Mike reluctantly returns to the lakeside getaway. There, he finds his beloved Yankee town held in the grip of a powerful millionaire, Max Devore, whose vindictive purpose is to take his three-year-old granddaughter, Kyra, away from her widowed young mother, Mattie. As Mike is drawn into Mattie's and Kyra's struggle-and as he falls in love with both of them-he is also drawn into the mystery of Sara Laughs…now the site of ghostly visitations and escalating terrors. What are the forces that have been unleashed here-and just what do they want of Mike Noonan?

Beautiful story and yet creepy at the same time. Definitely one of King’s best books. It starts off a little slow but goes up to a pace where I couldn’t even put it down. Totally recommended.

Stephen King, what happened?? Did he write this during a romantic dry spell? This book is so gross I had to put it down 3/4 of the way through, something I never expected to do with this usually stellar author. The ghost story is great. I genuinely would like to know what happens in the end. But it is wound up in a dirty old man fantasy that is so icky and aggressive that I could not go on. The narrator is a widower, a writer like Mr. King. He was a good husband and in love and his wife dies unexpectedly before this story even begins. There's some question of her fidelity, but it was a great marriage according to him. This is the set up for him to be free to lust after and fantasize in GRAPHIC detail about doing all kinds of things with a girl that he repeatedly describes as almost childlike and way too young for him. Oh, and the girl is in distress and he's the only one who can help her. Get the gist? But you ladies can't get mad at him because he was a good and faithful husband. What ensues is a relentless hammering of his metaphorical penis on the metaphorical forehead of the reader, with some ghosty stuff thrown in to keep the brand going. I tried, I really tried to get past it and stick with the story. I could not.

I love this book. Have read it 3 times. My daughter doesn't like it. She says she can't get into it past the point of the wife getting killed. She doesn't know what she's missing!!!
