Desperation in Death: An Eve Dallas Novel (In Death, 55)

The #1 New York Times bestselling author presents a gripping new thriller that pits homicide detective Eve Dallas against a conspiracy of exploitation and evil…

New York, 2061: The place called the Pleasure Academy is a living nightmare where abducted girls are trapped, trained for a life of abject service while their souls are slowly but surely destroyed. Dorian, a thirteen-year-old runaway who'd been imprisoned there, might never have made it out if not for her fellow inmate Mina, who'd hatched the escape plan. Mina was the more daring of the two―but they'd been equally desperate.

Unfortunately, they didn't get away fast enough. Now Dorian is injured, terrified, and wandering the streets of New York, and Mina lies dead near the waterfront while Lt. Eve Dallas looks over the scene.

Mina's expensive, elegant clothes and beauty products convince Dallas that she was being groomed, literally and figuratively, for sex trafficking―and that whoever is investing in this high-overhead operation expects windfall profits. Her billionaire husband, Roarke, may be able to help, considering his ties to the city's ultra-rich. But Roarke is also worried about the effect this case is having on Dallas, as it brings a rage to the surface she can barely control. No matter what, she must keep her head clear--because above all, she is desperate for justice and to take down those who prey on and torment the innocent.

I love JD Robb and own all the In Death books. This was a good story; but it was vague in plot details, setting details and character involvement. The characters were present, but almost none had dialogue and very limited interaction. Mavis has a special scene but otherwise, I missed hearing the other characters. It's time to showcase Peabody and McNab. It's time for another truly mysterious villian. It's time for an international setting. Roarke's skills make it almost too easy for this case to be solved.

I've read 55!! of these..... Love the characters, consistently good storylines. Yes, there's a sort of formula to these novels but the fully formed characters, attention to detail and even minor characters shine, and a great plot. Can't ask for more other than she keep writing!

Loved loved loved!!! One of the best ones yet. I always look forward to these books when they come out. Some are better then others and this one was the best. my heart litterly broke at everything that those girls went through, and made me stop and realize this happens everyday all over the world. I just wish that all the Leo's in the world would be able to stop this from occuring. Great job and looking forward to the next!

I’ve been reading this series since it first debuted all those years ago and couldn’t put this one down. It was really good. Cons: If you don’t like reading about child exploitation this book is one you may want to skip. I generally don’t read a lot of books that use F bombs and this one was full of them; however, it fit the story. If it had been any other writer or story plot, I wouldn’t have finished it. Pros: I liked that we got to check in on some of the characters from previous books. I’ve loved the growth of Eve and Roark as a couple. There relationship always makes me smile.

J.D. Robb remains one of my favorite authors. Her ability to continue to develop characters, many of whom at this point feel like home to me, is astounding. Obviously, the theme is futuristic murder mysteries, but she manages not to retell the same story each time, despite having written over 50 stories in the same world about the same set of characters. I appreciate the nuances and the ways she writes characters you root for, even as they experience terrible, tragic things. I highly recommend this book, and all books in this series!
