Faithless in Death: An Eve Dallas Novel (In Death, 52)
In the new Eve Dallas police thriller from #1 New York Times-bestselling author J. D. Robb, what looked like a lover's quarrel turned fatal has larger―and more terrifying―motives behind it…
The scene in the West Village studio appears to be classic crime-of-passion: two wineglasses by the bed, music playing, and a young sculptor named Ariel Byrd with the back of her head bashed in. But when Dallas tracks down the wealthy Upper East Side woman who called 911, the details don't add up. Gwen Huffman is wealthy, elegant, comforted by her handsome fiancé as she sheds tears over the trauma of finding the body―but why did it take an hour to report it? And why is she lying about little things?
As Eve and her team look into Gwen, her past, and the people around her, they find that the lies are about more than murder. As with sculpture, they need to chip away at the layers of deception to find the shape within―and soon they're getting the FBI involved in a case that involves a sinister, fanatical group and a stunning criminal conspiracy.

Another good way to while away some weekend hours. The team are in fine form with - hooray - Nadine and Mavis back (briefly) on the page. A cult with international reach and revolting tenets is uncovered due to a brutal murder. As Eve, her extended team, the FBI and Interpol work doggedly to bring them down we have bright and brutal moments both. I do enjoy these escapes from Miss Robb.

JD Robb gets more intense and spellbinding with each progressive book. Eve Dallas, Peabody,Roarke and the entire bull pen at NYPSD help to solve a murder as well as am entire network of human trafficking in all its terrifying forms. Once again 5 stars*****

So ‘on topic’ with the subject matter, very sensitively handled but nevertheless frightening to know these things do happen. Eve and Roarke were, as always, the stars of the book with their friends and colleagues ably assisting them. The bad gals and guys and the not quite so bad ones all got what they deserved. The victims themselves, one could easily see them becoming survivors as the story provided them with the support they needed. The backstory that runs through these books always provides a look into the hearts of the lead characters and this book has done that in a very positive way. Love this series - waiting with bated breath now for number 53.

Loved this latest offering in the In Death series. This one of very focused on the case and mostly takes place at the stations or working the case. Somerset gets to take a breather in this one as we don’t see a lot of him. We get a little bit of Mavis but it’s a big deal. The story here is cleverly plotted out and twisty-turny. What starts as a likely crime of passion murder turns into so much more...horrifyingly more. And so much of the writing parallels as social commentary. The description of this cult and its followers/believers, while supposedly religious based here has an eerily familiar ring to it. What is really freaky is how much of it turns out to be prescient. And the coincidence of release day being the day of the actual start to the second impeachment trial is something else. I continue to be amazed that Robb can still turn out such great stories after so much time. The world building and character development is true master class status. Any author seeking to develop and maintain a series that follows the same characters over the long haul needs to do a deep dive study of JD Robb’s work from Naked in Death (1995) to Faithless in Death (2021). 52 full length novels plus a bunch of novellas. It is my all time favorite series and I have read and listened to them all over and over again. I can’t say enough about this world, these characters or this storytelling.

It's a shame that Robb/Roberts went political in this book, even going so far as to name a Senator McConnell from Kentucky. (I assume a successor or that the stem cell therapies really progressed in the next 40 years.) This book isn't up to earlier efforts at all - and there's only one sexy encounter between our (usually) favorite couple. Does Roberts hope to bring on her hopefully fictitious Urban Wars by increasing the cultural divisiveness in the US?
