Florida Woman: A Novel

"Welcome to the weird world of Atlas, an animal refuge that also happens to be home to some deeply strange human behavior…" -Kimberly King Parsons, author of Black Light

Jamie is a Florida Woman. She grew up on the beach, thrives in humidity, has weathered more hurricanes than she can count, and now, after going viral for an outrageous crime she never meant to commit, she has the requisite headline to her name-and the impending jail time with it.

So when Atlas Wildlife Center, a shelter for exotic monkeys, offers Jamie the chance to take a community service sentence for the summer, it seems like just the fresh start Jamie needs to finally get her life back on track…until it's not.

Something sinister stirs in the dark palmetto woods, and secrets lurk among the three beguiling staff women of Atlas as they affectionately take Jamie under their wing. Soon, her summer is set to become material for an even stranger Florida headline than she could've imagined.

"Well plotted and satisfying." -Washington Post

"A bewitching debut." -Publishers Weekly

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this story, but it exceeded all I could imagine!! This book has a great backdrop, mystery, and an intense ending!! I truly enjoyed it!

Iffy. The first half of the book was decidedly scary in the direction it looked like it was going. Then, the real plot revealed itself and it changed timbre a bit. Interesting to read about captive monkeys. Not viral enough subject for me to make Jamie a Florida Woman.

I could not put this book down! About one-third of the way through I started feeling a knot in my stomach because I knew SOMETHING WAS HAPPENING and hoo boy, something did! The suspense was intense in the best ways, and the end was so fulfilling. Rogers writes so descriptively that the book played like a movie in my head as I read along, and I was sad to finish it because I enjoyed it so very much!

A fresh voice out of Florida — whose sharp, witty, lightly weird take fits right in with my favorite authors from that state — and a story that makes me want to find my friends and talk RIGHT NOW about group think, exotic animals, substances, viral internet, how we ignore our instincts around strong enough personalities, what we let others convince us of when we really want to believe, the extremes we forgive in others as long as they share our beliefs, and more. This would be a good book group choice.

Florida, monkeys, a secret cult, strong women—this has every element needed for an enthralling story. Add in Deb Roger’s gifted writing and it’s a sure fire hit. Highly recommend!
