Join an epic cross-country journey that will have you on the edge of your seat, as two families head West and confront the hardships and triumph only those brave enough to face an untamed land could overcome, in this riveting saga from the legendary bestselling author…
Missouri, 1860. Rumors of war between the North and South are spreading across the land. In rural Green County, many of the farmers are already choosing sides. But not John Zachary. His loyalties lie with his family first-and his heart is telling him to go west. Hoping to build a new life in the fertile valleys of Oregon, he convinces his best friend, Emmett Braxton, to pack up their families and join him on a wagon train across the Oregon Trail. The journey will be long and hard. The physical hardships and grueling mental challenges will bring out the best in some-and the worst in others. But with the guidance of an experienced wagon master and scout, they are determined to reach their destiny, no matter how high the cost . . .
Twenty-seven wagons. Twenty-seven different hopes and dreams. This sprawling epic novel from a master storyteller captures the beauty and danger of the American West-and the pioneer spirit of those who tamed it . . .

Excellent story of the hardships and adventures of settlers on a wagon train heading west. Plenty of action and keeps your interest with a great ending.

I cannot recall to mind an author ,aside from L'amour ,who's reliably going to be a guaranteed great choice to read. Pick up a book by this man (J.A. included) , and only a progressive hipster will find a reason for complaining. Well written, generally accurate historically, and just plain fun to read.

Of course, all good westerns need hero’s and this one is no exception. The book moves ahead vignette by vignette as the wagon train moves across the country from Independence, MO to Oregon City. There is good character development and by the end, you feel like the end leaves you missing good friends you would like to hear more about. It is a good book for readers that enjoy the history of our western movement.

I try to read any books written by , Mr Johnstone. I've never been disappointed. I can read any of his books and feel like I'm right in the story with the heroes. I can cross the rivers and sit around the fire side, and smell the smoke. I become part of the story. Great reading.

My first book by this author. While I know that this novel is a work of fiction, I have no doubt that everything that happened in this book happened to someone that traveled on those wagon trains going out to Oregon to start a new life. The characterization was excellent, the books touches on sexism, racism, dislike of others just because, murder, and alcoholism. But, it also shows peoples true spirit in helping each other, standing up for others that are downtrodden, defending the weak, standing up to bully's, and that tough American spirit that those travelers had or acquired on their travels. I think that this would make a great book club selection so that we in our modern life can realize what our ancestors went through.
