Godkiller: A Novel (Godkiller, 1)

"Epic and intimate, tender and sharp, Godkiller is a triumph of storytelling and the beginning of a story that I can't wait to follow." – Hannah Whitten, New York Times bestselling author of For the Wolf

Enter a land where all gods have been banned, and one young woman is paid to kill those who still hide in the shadows-the explosive #1 internationally bestselling fantasy debut in a new trilogy for fans of The Witcher and American Gods.

You are not welcome here, godkiller…

As a child, Kissen saw her family murdered at the whim of a fire god. Now, Kissen makes a living killing gods, and she enjoys it. That is until she discovers a god she cannot kill: Skedi, a small god of white lies, has somehow bound his life to that of a young noble girl, and they desperately need Kissen's help.

Joined by a disillusioned knight on a secret quest, the trio must travel to the ruined city of Blenraden, where the last of the wild gods reside, to each beg a favor.

Pursued by assassins and demons, and in the midst of burgeoning civil war, they will all face a reckoning. Something is rotting at the heart of their world, and they are the only ones who can stop it.

" Godkiller ". The real page turner. The characterisation is unbelievable. Each chapter builds your experience of the principle people, the story line and leads you forward without giving anything away. Little wonder that this book is a Best Seller.

I really hope there will be another book to this. The characters are just so incredibly thought up and the world... I love the world in which we have been taken to. Kissen is such a strong female lead, and you really get to know her character, her strengths. The author has created some incredible yet unlikely friendships and how she has portrayed the God's, and what they do is both incredible and hugely imaginative. This book brings with it some powerful emotions and thoughts, but it's a story that leaves you thinking and wanting more.

I completely and utterly fell in love with Godkiller. I should have known, really, considering as it’s a book about a world inhabited by hundreds of gods, a god-war and a main character who hunts them down for work. Some of my favourite things to read about and reading Godkiller reminded me that I really need to dig into more books with this kind of subject as the plot! Hannah Kaner has created a rich and varied world where gods used to rule, not just huge, omnipresent gods, but gods of broken sandals and other small things. If an offering can be placed a god can be created. Add in the city of Blenraden, where gods still live and where the war was fought and it just captivated me. From the first mention of Blenraden I knew I’d spend the whole book looking forward to seeing this ruined city and the gods that still reside there. And I was not disappointed. I also loved our trio of characters. They may not all see eye to eye at the start but I loved watching their friendships grow and change through their journey. They all have different perspectives on the world and they all have their own views on the gods. They made for such a wonderful ragtag group and following their journey was just wonderful. I’m so, so happy that Godkiller is the first in a series. I really want to explore more of the world and Hannah’s writing.

I selected "Godkiller" by Hannah Kaner based on a recommendation. It wasn't until after I'd ordered it, that I had noticed it was part of a series. I almost didn't read it after that, because I don't really like to read series unless they are complete (unless it is a manga series), but I went ahead and read it and now I'm hooked. The "Godkiller" is seemingly Kissen as she is a godkiller. The book opens with the tragic story of her childhood. Then it switches to the present and she is a godkiller and it means that literally. When she kills a god, the god leaves her a warning, "When Middren falls to the gods, your kind will be the first to die." She puts it to the back of her mind but then she encounters a young girl named Inara who has a problem. She is bound with a god and they want to be unbound and no, killing the annoying little god is not one of the answers. So begins the journey of Kissen, Inara, Skedi and another to a specific place in Middren. The story is lean and fierce. The author keeps the pace quick and nimble. There's no padding at all in the narrative which is my favorite kind of storytelling. It does end on a cliffhanger and now the wait begins for the second installment. I'm hoping that the second book doesn't take forever to come out and I also hope the author keeps it as tight of a narrative as she did the first, but for now, I'm enjoying the afterglow of the first book. It is really fantastic.

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.) Godkiller swept me away. Kissen was a character I was fated to love. Wronged by a god and turned into a totally badass god killer. Grumpy and hardened - or so she thinks - to the world, Kissen immediately had me in her grasps. But then I met Inara and her companion Skediceth and I was fully smitten. Being multiple POV, I do mean that Godkiller has a character for everyone. With a mentor-who-is-extremely-talented-protector and a somewhat naive-optimistic-girl, Godkiller melted my heart. I know we talk about grumpy sunshine, but can we talk about grumpy protectors and sunshine kids? While there's a plethora of action, and plenty of gods introduced which I need to read more about, Godkiller remains rooted in these characters. Those who will instantly charm us, who will leave a suspicious taste in our mouth, or ones who will change our minds. It was a pure delight to watch these characters bloom in front of us.
