I Will Find You

Five years ago, an innocent man began a life sentence for murdering his own son. Today he found out his son is still alive.

David Burroughs was once a devoted father to his three-year-old son Matthew, living a dream life just a short drive away from the working-class suburb where he and his wife, Cheryl, first fell in love--until one fateful night when David woke suddenly to discover Matthew had been murdered while David was asleep just down the hall.

Half a decade later, David's been wrongly accused and convicted of the murder, left to serve out his time in a maximum-security prison-a fate which, grieving and wracked with guilt, David didn't have the will to fight. The world has moved on without him. Then Cheryl's younger sister, Rachel, makes a surprise appearance during visiting hours bearing a strange photograph. It's a vacation shot of a bustling amusement park a friend shared with her, and in the background, just barely in frame, is a boy bearing an eerie resemblance to David's son. Even though it can't be, David just knows: Matthew is still alive.

David plans a harrowing escape, determined to achieve the impossible – save his son, clear his own name, and discover the real story of what happened. But with his life on the line and the FBI following his every move, can David evade capture long enough to reveal the shocking truth?

MAR ‘23 - 4 STARS). DESCRIPTION: An innocent father serving life for the murder of his own son receives evidence that his child may still be alive, and must break out of prison to find out the truth. REVIEW : I’ve read 14 books by Mr. Coben and my ratings have been anywhere from 1 Star (1), 2 Stars (2) and 4/5 Stars (11). I didn’t like The Boy from the Woods (Wilde #1) (‘20 - 2 Stars) so I skipped Wilde Bk #2 (The Match ‘22). A couple of recent favorites were Run Away (‘19 - 4 Stars) and Don’t Let Go (‘18 - 5 Stars). Very suspenseful & action-packed plot that kept me reading. Quite a few reviews thought the plot was over-the-top, but not for me. That’s why I read fiction! I did feel the ending was a little rushed but I was still entertained the whole way.

Oh my! I could not put this book down. I forced myself to do it so I could get to bed at a decent hour last night, but snapped it up again today as soon as I had time. I think this is Mr. Coben's 35th book. I have been reading him since the beginning and I always marvel at his talent and every book, I think this is the best book ever. This book is the best book ever. David Burroughs is serving life in prison for having murdered his three year old son. A crime he says he did not commit. He has broken contact with everyone in his life and most believe he killed his son. His wife divorced him. He is resigned. He has been in prison for five years. Then, he gets a visit from his sister-in-law and former close friend. She has a photo of a boy who is just accidentally in the back of someone else's photo. It is his son. This is the beginning of a never ending thrill ride of action. I will not give spoilers and you can read more from the publisher if you wish to. I recommend buying this book and reading it as soon as you can. It is the best!

All inmates claim their innocence. They didn’t do it: no matter the irrefutable evidence, multiple witnesses, no matter the jury's verdict. And in the case of one such inmate, he even toys with the idea that he may actually have battered his son with a baseball bat. Five years in prison changes a person. David Burroughs has moved on if only within his cell. Then his sister-in-law visits. His only visitor in five years. She shows him a blurry photograph. Could it be his murdered son? Not possible. No one had a doubt that David was a murderer. David is attacked by fellow prisoner, a serial killer, and he unleashes violence that surprises even him. That photo in David’s mind confirms that his son is still alive. His only recourse is escape. But no one has escaped from this prison, ever. He is not a criminal and although he’s tried to envision escape, It’s not possible. Through a series of unusual occurrences, David finds himself suddenly free. Free to search for Matthew, his deceased son. David finds helpers along the way, but the FBI has two agents dedicated to recapturing him. And they are formidable. He stumbles into traps and barriers but with a steadfast mantra, I will find you.

Thanks to a podcast by Charlie and Kate Gibson, I discovered this author who has been writing for many years. As a children’s library, I don’t keep up with adult books as much. But I am trying to get better and this author seems well worth getting to know more. His opening sentence gets her attention and keeps you going. You care about the character quickly and want to know what’s going to happen. Despite being an an avid reader, I don’t stay up late reading books. I am a morning person. But last night I badly wanted to just read all night and finish this book. Unfortunately, I couldn’t stay awake. But I have enjoyed relaxing on a sunny day, the kind that comes after really bad storms, and I have finished the book. Now to look for more books by this author. By the way, the two FBI investigators have great personalities of their own. I know that Charlie and Kate Gibson were encouraging the author to create a series just on them. And I can understand why.

As I start every review of one of Harlan Cohen''s books, I really like Harlan Cohen. I've read all his book and he never disappoints. I have to say I had trouble with the first chapter. It was well written but the premise was so sad that I didn't pick it up again for a couple of days. But I knew it would be an exciting book so I went back to it. It was, indeed, exciting. An improbable story, maybe, but I couldn't put it down. There are twists and turns that I've come to expect with this author, but I never knew what they would be. Getting close to the end, I couldn't imagine how he could bring it all to a conclusion but he did so brilliantly. I didn't love the banter between Max and Sarah, but that's a really small thing. I loved everything else about the novel and recommend it highly.
