I visit Charleston often, but this is the first book I've read about it that allowed me to understand what's going on in the minds of the young women who live there and, to a certain extent, the minds of young women everywhere. A must-read.

This one's hard to put down--a refreshing new voice. If you've ever been to Charleston, you'll want to read it for a delicious inside peak into the famously closed Charleston society--through the eyes of an insider who is also a rebel, a new generation Charlestonian. If you haven't been to Charleston, read it to find out what you're missing. Happy to have discovered a fun new Southern writer--my favorite kind--who delves into the good and bad of the South's rooted traditions.

I usually lean toward non-fiction, but In Polite Company has been a fun and refreshing break from my usual fare. The prose is vivid and evocative without being suffocating. The setting makes it an appropriate hot-weather read, but don't mistake it for summer pulp. It's obvious that the author followed the age old wisdom in her debut: "writing what you know." Hagerty's personal experiences shimmer beneath the plot, and her intimate knowledge of Charleston is a bonus feature for anyone interested in visiting. Looking forward to the TV adaptation!
