Lily's Promise: Holding On to Hope Through Auschwitz and Beyond―A Story for All Generations
"Heartbreaking, inspirational, and uplifting, this is an engaging story of one remarkable woman's will to survive." - The Library Journal
"Utterly compelling, heartbreaking, truthful and yet redemptive . . . a testimony of irrepressible spirit and an unforgettable family chronicle. I couldn't stop reading it."-Simon Sebag Montefiore
In this life-affirming intergenerational memoir, Lily Ebert, a Holocaust survivor, and her great-grandson, Dov Forman, come together to share her story-an unforgettable tale of resilience and resistance.
On Yom Kippur, 1944, fighting to stay alive as a prisoner in Auschwitz, Lily Ebert made a promise to herself. She would survive the hell she was in and tell the world her story, for everyone who couldn't. Now, at ninety-eight, this remarkable woman-and TikTok sensation, thanks to the help of her eighteen-year-old great-grandson-fulfills that vow, relaying the details of her harrowing experiences with candor, charm, and an overflowing heart.
In these pages, she writes movingly about her happy childhood in Hungary, the death of her mother and two youngest siblings on their arrival at Auschwitz, and her determination to keep her two other sisters safe. She describes the inhumanity of the camp and the small acts of defiance that gave her strength. Lily lost so much, but she built a new life for herself and her family, first in Israel and then in London.
Dov knows that it is up to younger people like him to keep Lily's promise. He and Lily bridge the generation gap to share her experience, reminding us of the joy that accompanies the solemn responsibility of keeping the past-and our stories-alive.

"Utterly compelling, heartbreaking, truthful and yet redemptive, a memoir of the Holocaust, a testimony of irrepressible spirit and an unforgettable family chronicle, written in lucid prose by a truly remarkable woman about her life from Hungary to Auschwitz, Israel to London. "Unforgettable." - Daily Mail (UK)
"Though Lily saw and experienced inhumanity at its lowest ebb, her reaction was not one of bitterness or cynicism, but of hope and compassion. Lily has dedicated her life to sharing her astonishing story so that the world would never again descend into such depths. Yet Lily's Promise is only half of the battle. It falls to us to heed her words and to internalize and learn from them. This book calls every reader to action. Lily's message of hope over despair is more necessary today than it has ever been." - Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis

I just recently received the book and have begun reading it! Even the first fifteen pages are captivating! The grandma who worked with her grandson to get her memories in print has a wonderful sense of humor and I am eager to have the time to read the rest.

I first came across Lily when I joined Tiktok at the end of 2021. I was moved by this beautiful soul's willingness to share her story with us all. One of three Holocaust Survivors that I follow on social media it made me realize how important it was for their stories to be told. History will repeat itself if we forget the past. Moving from beginning to end, difficult to read at times but sobering as well. The Nazis couldn't break her or the other survivors of this nightmare. They tried but failed. Pure Goodness triumphed over "True Evil". Remarkable memoir and a must read.

This book is very well written. I am a true believer that if we Don't learn from history, history will repeat itself. I first heard of this book months ago on one of the morning shows. I placed my order on Kindle that very day. Lily Ebert is a very strong woman who lived through a horrible time and instead of letting all she experienced ruin her life she kept her faith and became even stronger. The book tells of two promises she made. Before he father died he asked Lily to take care of her mother and sisters. When her family first arrived at the concentration camp her family was split up. Her mother, younger sister and brother apparently were killed. Lily and her two younger sisters were kept alive so as to work for the Germans. She always thought first of them and kept them together and as safe as they could be living as they were. Her second promise was to herself . She promised if she survived she would let the world know what she experienced in the hope it would not happen again. For many years she kept it all inside her but as she aged she knew she had to talk about the evil she had lived through. Her Great Grandson when the Divide 19 pandemic threatened to sideline Lily he helped her to continue to get her story out to even more people. This is a wonderfully heart warming story!

She explains how everything can change in the blink of an eye. She brings us on a journey that no human being should ever be exposed to.. and we should be there for one another because there can be such evil that is unthinkable to those who do not learn from our history
I AM A lynn mitchel
In parts it could be hard read. However, it is a real historical share.
