"An insightful and heartening reminder to accept emotions and respect feelings.
A picture book encourages kids to recognize their emotions. Cummings' White narrator explains that "feelings…help you explore…like crayons coloring you within." The narrator describes situations and common emotional responses, reminding readers to recognize and accept their feelings by repeating the phrase "and that's okay!" For instance, readers can say "I feel sad and that's okay!" after "hearing names or words that hurt, / getting teased about your shirt. / Saying bye to furry friends. / The final day when summer ends." Other scenarios include feeling lonely, loved, scared, embarrassed, or joyful ("Eating cones of cold ice cream. / Waking up from a happy dream. / Building castles made of sand. / Giving friends a helping hand"). Ultimately, the narrator stresses that it's essential to "honor feelings, breathe them deep," and acknowledge their impermanence. The author accessibly demonstrates the significance of emotional awareness and recognition through kid-friendly, relatable examples. The work will be a valuable and validating resource for youngsters. Shojaie's friendly, cartoonish illustrations include Black, brown, Asian, and White kids. Most scenes mirror descriptions in the text, as when an "embarrassed" kid cries after falling off a bike, a child feels "loved" playing a game with grandma, and another feels "safe" reading in bed with mom. Some spreads feature creative elements, such as a youngster holding hands with an anthropomorphic heart. The last page shows kids with different facial expressions clutching vivid hearts against a rainbow sky."

Great Book for Teachings Kids About Emotions! This book is a great resource for teaching kids about emotions. As a therapist who has worked with young children, it is hard to find a book that provides such clear and concrete education on emotion identification, so I was pleasantly surprised to find this. I also really liked how it promotes acceptance of the range of emotions a child can experience with examples relatable to their developmental age. I'm excited to share this book with others! --Alex Casertano - LSMW
Gret Book Series! I bought this series for my grandson who is on the spectrum. As anyone raising a child on the spectrum knows managing and understanding feelings and social skills can be so frustrating for them. My grandson took exactly what he should take away from each book. I was so excited and these are the books he chooses to read. As he's trying to navigate friendships right now and this helps. Thanks, Magic in me! --Donna Hill

After our youngest was born, our oldest was having a hard time transitioning. After 4 years of being an only child he'd gotten used to having more time to work through fits or big moments with us. His frustrations grew when he realized baby brother was held when crying but he could not always be held. We started talking about our emotions and with this book and other strategies he's really begun to tell us and others how he's feeling. He liked this book because of the varying colors and multiple reasons for the feeling on each page.

My daughter has really loved the Magic of Me books, and I sure have too. Such great illustrations and I think this will really help her identify her emotions, which is the first step of getting to a point of being able to talk about emotions and practice regulating those feelings/responses. I think this is a great book and love that it gives pointers for the parents at the end.

I thought this for my nephew and thoroughly enjoyed reading it before I wrapped it. I wish I had had books like this growing up to let me know that it was okay to feel my feelings and move forward. Thanks for a wonderful series!
