I felt like 80% of the book was discussions about food, Hannah looking through a peep hole and cats.m I lost track of how many chapters started with Hannah taking something out of her industrial oven. I don’t know how her bakery stays a float given the amount of product she gives away. The murder certainly took a back seat to the recipes. Not sure why I keep buying this series.

I’m invested in the characters, having read all the books in this series. But the writing was weak and repetitive, and the recipes were more compelling than the plot. Since it ended on a cliffhanger, I guess I’ll have to read the next book, but I hope it is back to the author’s previous standard.

It was a pretty good read but not the best offering from this series. It is implausible that a sheriff's department would let civilians do the majority of the investigation, even if they are related by marriage. I did not like the ending and I did not think the slut shaming angle was realistic in today's world. I don't know how they manage not to be wired with all the cookies they eat and coffee they drink. I also missed the character Mike who was being isolated due to burn out. The recipes sounded great.

Sigh...I had a difficult time deciding what to rate this book. I am a longtime Hannah Swensen fan and have read every book and short story in the series. The past several books have been dismal in quality where it seemed like all the characters did was make food and eat food. The recipes took up more space in the books than the plot. They must have found a new ghostwriter because the investigation and storytelling were better than they have been in recent books (though not as good as the older books). However, several characters have major personality changes that Hannah fans will notice, i.e. Andrea is very interesting in cooking and has become a talented cake decorator. I had a difficult time accepting that Bill, who is the chief of police, is unequipped to lead a murder investigation without Mike. He allowed Hannah to lead official police interviews at The Cookie Jar while the officers sat around and ate baked goods. Hannah was doing all the follow-up and checking on alibis even though she has traditionally been discouraged from investigating. I also had a difficult time accepting the supposed motivation for the murder. It is 2023 and time to move past so-called slut-shaming. The ending of the book was also weirdly delivered. It set up a cliffhanger for the next book, but it was abrupt and very unexpected. I would probably rate this book lower if I wasn't a fan of the characters, and I didn't feel it was an improvement over the most recent books. But it was far from a satisfying return to Lake Eden in my opinion.

Once I would finish these books I'd lend them to my Grandmother. She passed this pass April. It took a few days to start it once it came out, her name was Nancy. The first time I read Aunt Nancy's name, I tossed my Kindle aside and said nope! I just picked it back up today and finished it. I wish I could share it with her, she would have LOVED the recipes, that was her favorite part.We read the entire series together, I can't wait for the next one.
