Pride and Premeditation (Jane Austen Murder Mysteries, 1)

One of BuzzFeed's best YA books of 2021!

Perfect for fans of the Lady Janies and Stalking Jack the Ripper, the first book in the Jane Austen Murder Mysteries trilogy is a clever retelling of Pride and Prejudice that reimagines the iconic settings, characters, and romances in a thrilling and high-stakes whodunit.

When a scandalous murder shocks London high society, seventeen-year-old aspiring lawyer Lizzie Bennet seizes the opportunity to prove herself, despite the interference of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, the stern young heir to the prestigious firm Pemberley Associates.

Convinced the authorities have imprisoned the wrong person, Lizzie vows to solve the murder on her own. But as the case-and her feelings for Darcy-become more complicated, Lizzie discovers that her dream job could make her happy, but it might also get her killed.

Three of Jane Austen's classic novels receive a murder mystery makeover in this romantic and thrilling three-book series that's perfect for fans of The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy.

Pride and Premeditation is followed by Sense and Second-Degree Murder, in which aspiring scientist Elinor Dashwood and her sister Marianne, a budding detective, work together to solve the mystery of their father's murder.

This book was a very fun retelling of Pride and prejudice with a murder mystery and Lizzie Bennet wanting to become a barrister and prove to her Father she can, Bingley is accused of murder and she starts her investigation based on logic. Purists might have some issues on this one, but I thoroughly enjoyed this story and the twists and turns. It reminded me of Kerri Maniscalco’s young adult series Stalking Jack the Ripper, or the duology, Nicole Glover’s The conductors. If you want to find another story with some similar but unique stories.

This book was just so amazing! Highlights: - Pride and Prejudice retelling - enemies-to-lovers - YA murder mystery - slightly more modern take on the Regency era - strong female MC - “trapped in a closet together” trope Pride and Prejudice has always been one of my favorite love stories, so when I heard about this book, I just HAD to read it! This book had much more of a YA feel than the original P&P story. I think part of that has to do with the fact that the characters are younger than in the original story. One thing I really liked is that Lizzie seems even more headstrong and fiery in this retelling. She speaks her mind more and isn’t afraid to take chances, which I completely admire. In fact, for most of the book, it was more about Lizzie trying to prove herself and less about her relationship with Darcy. But that relationship did come in at some point and it didn’t disappoint. One thing I really want to say is I think the author did an amazing job of staying true to the personalities of the characters while still giving this story new life. Also, the killer was so unexpected! Normally I am able to guess it pretty early on, but not with this book. I loved it! I definitely recommend this book to P&P fans, mystery fans, and regency fans! And if you love books with strong women proving men wrong, this is the one for you!

This was SO much better than I thought it would be! I enjoyed Pride and Prejudice and was expecting much of the same but with a murder twist. And while if did have that, it had so many more surprises! The author really took liberties with this, while keeping true to personalities of our beloved Jane Austen characters. I love when a book surprises me, and this did in such a pleasant way. It breathed new life into a story I already loved and made it completely new. Took my favorite genres of historical fiction, romance and mysteries and blended them together beautifully. Highly recommend!

This story presumes a younger Elizabeth and Darcy, but they still oppose one another through misunderstandings. Other Bennet family members are de-emphasized, while Darcy is no relation to the de Bourghs, with his father being a barrister and head of a prominent legal firm. Elizabeth bumbles around but eventually figures out one of the villains, entrapping him to identify the evil mastermind who is framing Bingley for murder. I found the mystery of only mild interest, and the characters equally so. I have little interest in reading the sequel(s), and will probably just delete this story from my Kindle.

If you are a lover of Pride & Prejudice, then you need to pick up Pride & Premeditation! I have read many a P&P retellings in my day and let me just tell you that not everyone can capture the spirit of Jane Austen. Not only does Tirzah Price do just that, but she also used a story that I know like that back of my hand and gave it new life! Elizabeth Bennett is hands down one of my all time favorite characters and that didn’t change in this version. Lizzie wants to prove to her father that she is capable of being a barrister in a time when women weren’t even allowed in court. When she hears that Mr. Bingley has been accused of murder she knows this is her chance, but of course Mr. Darcy beats her to it. And let the shenanigans begin! I had such a great time reading this book and I didn’t want it end. Who would have known that I needed a P&P murder mystery?!
