Seven Dirty Secrets

From the New York Times bestselling author of Five Total Strangers and "master of suspense" (BCCB), Natalie D. Richards, comes a pulse-pounding YA thriller about a girl who goes on a mysterious scavenger hunt, only to discover that someone knows her worst secret...and is out for blood.

I know seven dirty secrets:
One caused the fall. One did nothing. One saw it all.
One didn't care. One used their head. One played the hero.
One was left for dead.

On her eighteenth birthday, Cleo receives a mysterious invitation to a scavenger hunt. She's sure her best friend Hope or her brother Connor is behind it, but no one confesses. And as Cleo and Hope embark on the hunt, the seemingly random locations and clues begin to feel familiar.

In fact, all of the clues seem to be about Cleo's dead boyfriend, Declan, who drowned on a group rafting trip exactly a year ago. A bracelet she bought him. A song he loved. A photo of the rafting group, taken just before Declan drowned. And then the phone calls start, Declan's voice taunting Cleo with a cryptic question: You ready?

As the clock on the scavenger hunt ticks down, it becomes clear that someone knows what really happened to Declan. And that person will stop at nothing to make sure Cleo and her friends pay. Can they solve the hunt before someone else winds up dead?

Seven Dirty Secrets is a weird name for this book. I get it but it really doesn't match what you are reading. This is a young adult novel in the genre of all of those that showcase children who really should have some adults around every once in a while. The seven friends here don't seem to have that. They are all older teenagers or young 20s but I just can't help but wonder sometimes. One of the seven dies and you just can't feel too badly about it. He was an abusive mess. And everyone knew it. Through a birthday scavenger hunt, the reader is brought back to the death and the events leading to it. The actual bad guy was not too hard to guess, but the clues were fun to follow and the descriptions of the city made it a place I'd like to visit, and I have never thought that before of anywhere in Ohio. In my defense I've only been to Toledo. Now I have a book store to visit. This was a quick and easy read with non stop action to keep you wanting to finish.

It’s been a year since Cleo’s BF drowned during a group rafting trip. Now it’s her 18th birthday and she’s received a mysterious gift. This story takes us through the scavenger hunt that starts when she opens the gift. Cyrus’s death was a tragedy, but Cleo is grateful to be rid of her abusive BF. Her home life and backstory of how her relationship with Cyrus began is awful. Her life has extremely improved in the past year. Her new BF is kind. She’s aiming to start university for Forensics. But once she starts following the clues, she realizes that someone knows more than they should about what happened on the trip. She needs to figure out who is behind this sick game before time runs out. Sincere thanks to Netgalley and Dreamscape Media for this advance review copy. Scavenger hunts are so much fun that it’s impossible not to love a story about a secret and dark one. Cleo wants to be a forensic analyst, so she cannot, under any circumstances, get in trouble with the law. But she’s hiding a very dark secret about her dead boyfriend. On her birthday, and the anniversary of the death, she starts receiving clues that seem extremely familiar. Only a small group of people would know their significance, so Cleo needs to solve the riddles while trying to figure out who’s behind them. In retrospect, a future law enforcement scientist should have seen it coming, but I still enjoyed the twists and turns, as well as the very suspenseful last part. Since this is a YA novel, I was expecting the characters to be shallow, but I ended up liking most of them (Hope can be my bestie any day!). Natasha Soudek offers a very rounded performance. Her villain sounds a little too creepy, which actually works, but the rest of the characters are distinctive and natural. Grown ups will also enjoy the ride. I chose to listen to this audiobook and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thank you, NetGalley/#Dreamscape Media!

Seven Dirty Secrets is a YA thriller that starts with a creepy gift and ends with a handful of secrets revealed. We follow Cleo on her 18th birthday as she’s sent on a scavenger hunt by an unknown party. While Cleo is big on scavenger hunts and mysteries, this hunt starts to feel more and more like she’s being hunted as clues are revealed. All of the clues seem to lead her to places that were important to her and her ex-boyfriend. The ex-boyfriend that died last year on her birthday trip that they took with 5 other people. Anyway. I don’t want to spill any beans, so what I will say is that I enjoyed this read. It covers some heavy themes and honestly had some moments that were very impactful that were outside of the mystery plot. I think what I enjoyed most about this story is that we know a big chunk of the what happened and why things are going on, but we don’t know the end game for the antagonist in this read so it’s what keeps it thrilling. Also the fact that more details are added to the story as we go and it’s just exciting, like truly solving a mystery that you thought you had the answers to already. To the point, I highly recommend this book if you want a YA thriller/mystery that has that perfect mix of suspense and actual teen angst. It’s incredibly well written and honestly just a good read!
