Seven Rules for Breaking Hearts

"A fresh take on modern romance." - Lauren Blakely, #1 New York Times bestselling author

Love breaks all the rules.

Margo Anderson is sworn off commitment. Alongside her best friend Jo, she runs a viral podcast featuring rules for hooking up without catching feelings. So when Jo surprises her by deciding to get married and takes up a sponsor's offer to host an all-expenses-paid wedding trip on Catalina Island, they have the whole internet to answer to.

In a scramble for content to appease their disappointed listeners, Margo cooks up a social experiment: break all her own dating rules, just to prove that it's a bad idea. And she's found the best man for the job in the groom's best friend and her old high school nemesis, Declan Walsh. He may be easier on the eyes than Margo remembered, but he's sure to be as smug and annoying as he was before. There is no chance Margo will ever catch feelings for him…until she does.

The more time they spend together through cake tastings and wedding party activities, Margo can't ignore their obvious spark, and she may actually be enjoying getting to know Declan. But can she let go of the rules to let him in?

Seven Rules for Breaking Hearts is a popular podcast hosted by two lifelong friends Go & Jo who have sworn off love and commitment. That is until Jo falls for and decides to marry a high school friend. The podcast has to pivot and the wedding is being paid for by a commercial sponsor on Catalina.. Friends with a history gather on this island vacation and there are feelings, romance and misunderstandings. 3.5 stars for this easy fun beach read from this debut author. For once men are shown in a positive light while the women carry more baggage. Enjoy and embrace the romance while waiting for their happy ending. Thank you to Netgalley and St Martins press for this story.

I really had a great time with this book! Margo and her best friend, Jo, are the voices behind a podcast promoting hooking up without dealing with emotions. Jo is getting married and Margo is trying to figure out how to proceed so she thinks maybe she could break all of the rules to feature in the next season. Enter Declan. Margo did not plan to fall for Declan, but they were perfect for each other. I really wanted to see this pair make things work. I liked both Margo and Declan and thought that the chemistry between them was amazing. The fact that they had some history together because they knew each other in high school added an extra layer to the story. Margo didn’t expect to catch any feelings for Declan but they were so good together that it seemed inevitable. I listened to the audiobook and thought that Karissa Vacker did a fantastic job with this story. I liked the range of voices that she used to help bring each of the characters to life. I found her voice to be very pleasant and I had no problems listening for hours at a time. I am certain that her narration added to my overall enjoyment of this story. I would definitely recommend this book to fans of contemporary romance. I thought that this was a fun read featuring a great cast of characters. I look forward to reading more of this author’s work in the future. I received a review copy of this book from Penguin Random House Audio and St. Martin’s Griffin.

RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ SPICE: 🔥🔥 Margo Anderson's best friend has put her in a difficult position. They are a popular podcasting duo who give tips on how to avoid feelings while dating. When Jo decides to get married at a destination wedding at Catalina Island, Margo is left holding the bag in dealing with their rather peeved audience. To pacify them, Margo comes up with a plan: She is going to break all of her own rules. Best man Declan Walsh may be the bane of Margo's existence, but he is also the perfect candidate for her experiment. But the more she spends time with him, the more she realizes there is more to the smug engineer than she bargained for. I really enjoyed this well-paced read. The main characters were very charming. While Declan was flirty and swoony, I especially love Margo and her masked vulnerability. Kristyn J. Miller did a fantastic job of striking a balance between Margo's charisma and flaws to create an easily relatable character. Miller also finds a great pace, even with the integration of podcast snippets and text conversations. Sometimes those can take the reader out of the story, but it is seamless with the plot in this read. I love a good enemies-to-lover banter, and this book is on par with that. I found Declan and Margo's exchanges cute, and while I wished for more spice, their connection is so fun and organic. I highly recommend this standalone read for those who love low-angst enemies-to-lover banter.

Margo "Go" and Jo are best friends who star in a popular podcast about hooking up without catching feelings. Things change when Jo gets engaged. They travel to Catalina Island for the wedding where Margo becomes reacquainted with someone from High School she'd rather forget. Looking for a new angle for their podcast, Margo wonders what would happen if she doesn't follow the seven rules. This was so enjoyable! I honestly didn't want to put it down. I absolutely loved the MMC, Declan, and appreciated him being compared to another favorite of mine, James Fraser, from Outlander. The characters were fun and relatable with great chemistry. There was a bit of witty banter (a favorite if mine) with some really vulnerable moments. If you love romance, definitely go check with one out.
