Bought the Book for a 7-Year-old and he absolutely loves it. He read over 3 chapters in a day and cannot get enough. He read Harry Potter books before which are even a bit harder reading difficulty and did fine so he has no problem understanding this book.

I’ve never read anything by Tui Sutherland before, but I started reading the Graphic novel of this book to my sons and wanted to read the book to find out what happens. 5 Young Dragons from different parts of Dragon World (Pyrrhia) Sea~Tsunami, Sand~ Sunny, Mud~Clay ,Rain~Glory, Night ~Starflight.. and (Sky..an opponent later) will bring peace to all by deciding the true Queen (Burn, Blaze or Blister)..or so it is said. Each Dragon comes from a different clan or section of their world each with their own unique powers. They are hidden away safely in a cave with 3 elders so aren’t very warm and fuzzy. I never know who’s on which side as it seems these Dragons are all scheming and full of drama. Queen Scarlet even has Entertainment with Dragons fighting to the death.. I was just Reading Indian Hill by Mark Tufo which also has a fighting arena in much the same way..except its aliens making humans fight each other to study them, lord over them and eschew a winner who doesn’t really win at all...the same sort of story here. But alas the dragons go on a journey they think is their destiny, meet other dragons and are discovering a twisted plot.. by whom they aren’t quite sure. Definately engaging and fun to read.. I don’t know that the pits are acceptable for little kids.. but middle graders yes (I have and 8 and a 6 year old). I’ve been reading the story without pictures lol. I’d like to read Menagerie, and also Spirit Animals as well. 4 Stars for a great start!

I purchased this book for my 9 year old daughter. I found out about this series at the Library. While sitting there a little girl was frantically putting her name on the waiting list for the newest release. When I overheard that the waiting list was over a duzen people long, I had to check out the series. So I purchased the book for my daughter. I gave it to her 2 days ago. She’s barely put it down since. This is her comment/review when I asked if she liked it: “This book must’ve been written by a Dragon because no human could know this much about Dragons.” She went on to say how much she loved it and how she really feels she part of this story. I would recommend this to anyone who is raising fantasy nerds, those that love fantasy and who want to help ignite your child’s imagination. It’s just a lovely story that has excited my daughter.

Read this and decide if you want your child to be influenced by this thinking: “What use is a crippled dragon who can’t fly? I’m surprised you haven’t killed yourself already.... Queen scarlet snapped dunes neck and dropped his body on the floor” This could have been written many ways- but this is not one of them. Not if you call yourself a child author.

"Leave?" Clay echoed, startled. "How? On our own?""Why not?" Tsunami said. "If we can find a way out–why should we have to wait another two years? I'm ready to save the world now, aren't you?""We can't stop the war by ourselves," he said. "We wouldn't know where to start."Still, part of him couldn't help imagining what it would be like to go home now. Back to the marshes, to the swamps, to a whole tribe of MudWings who looked like him and thought like him…back to his parents, whoever they were…What if they could do it? What if they could escape, and survive, and save the world…their own way?
