The Ickabog

From J.K. Rowling, a warm, fast-paced, funny fairy tale of a fearsome monster, thrilling adventure, and hope against all odds.

Once upon a time there was a tiny kingdom called Cornucopia, as rich in happiness as it was in gold, and famous for its food. From the delicate cream cheeses of Kurdsburg to the Hopes-of-Heaven pastries of Chouxville, each was so delicious that people wept with joy as they ate them.

But even in this happy kingdom, a monster lurks. Legend tells of a fearsome creature living far to the north in the Marshlands... the Ickabog. Some say it breathes fire, spits poison, and roars through the mist as it carries off wayward sheep and children alike. Some say it's just a myth...

And when that myth takes on a life of its own, casting a shadow over the kingdom, two children - best friends Bert and Daisy - embark on a great adventure to untangle the truth and find out where the real monster lies, bringing hope and happiness to Cornucopia once more.

Featuring full color illustrations by children from across the United States and Canada, this original fairy tale from one of the world's most celebrated storytellers will captivate readers of all ages.

Whilst it may be written for children, the Ickabog contains weighty themes and surprisingly deep allegory. It's style reminded me of a combination of Grimm's and Roald Dahl and I'll happily be reading this over and over again in the years to come.

As might be expected, a rollicking good tale from Ms Rowling. Pretty dark for the younger ones. The illustrations done by young artists are wonderful!

The sign of a great book is when you are reading it aloud to your kids and want to read ahead after they've gone to bed. J.K. Rowling continues to amaze me with her ability to capture kids and adults alike with her writings.

Been waiting for this ever since I started seeing the children's images on Twitter. Another beautiful book from a literary queen. Even though I'm currently reading three other books, I'll be diving into this one as soon as I finish posting this review. Also, a side note to Amazon- please keep the deliverer of this book on your staff for as long as possible. Over a year of being your customer and this one person was the ONLY person who actually went above and beyond. Give that person a raise!

I read this when Rowling released it chapter by chapter earlier this year. Yes, it’s a children’s book, and I’m a bit older than that, but it’s a good read, and an enjoyable tale for all ages. There’s friendship, bad guys, good guys, a “monster,” great illustrations from kids around the world, and, a moral as usual from Rowling, which kids will find hard to miss. Happy to add another JK Rowling book to my collection.
