The Last Thing He Told Me: A Novel

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BLOCKBUSTER * REESE WITHERSPOON BOOK CLUB PICK * SOON TO BE AN APPLE TV+ LIMITED SERIES STARRING JENNIFER GARNER * MORE THAN 2 MILLION COPIES SOLD

The "page-turning, exhilarating" (PopSugar) and "heartfelt thriller" (Real Simple) about a woman who thinks she's found the love of her life-until he disappears.

Before Owen Michaels disappears, he smuggles a note to his beloved wife of one year: Protect her. Despite her confusion and fear, Hannah Hall knows exactly to whom the note refers-Owen's sixteen-year-old daughter, Bailey. Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child. Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother.

As Hannah's increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered, as the FBI arrests Owen's boss, as a US marshal and federal agents arrive at her Sausalito home unannounced, Hannah quickly realizes her husband isn't who he said he was. And that Bailey just may hold the key to figuring out Owen's true identity-and why he really disappeared.

Hannah and Bailey set out to discover the truth. But as they start putting together the pieces of Owen's past, they soon realize they're also building a new future-one neither of them could have anticipated.

With its breakneck pacing, dizzying plot twists, and evocative family drama, The Last Thing He Told Me is a "page-turning, exhilarating, and unforgettable" (PopSugar) suspense novel.

Editorial Reviews

#1 New York Times Bestseller

"What starts as an intimate meditation on found families deftly turns into a heart-pounding mystery reminiscent of the best true crime stories. But both work so beautifully in this gripping, perfectly-paced novel. I dare you to stop reading."
-Susie Yang, New York Times bestselling author of White Ivy

"Laura Dave is a master story-teller. Gripping, big-hearted and twisty, The Last Thing He Told Me grabs readers from the very first page and never lets go."
-Greer Hendricks,New York Times best-selling co-author of The Wife Between Us and You Are Not Alone

"With dizzying suspense and gorgeous prose, The Last Thing He Told Me tackles tough questions about trust, marriage and what it means to be a family. A page-turner of the highest order."
-Riley Sager, New York Times bestselling author of Home Before Dark

"Laura Dave's The Last Thing He Told Me is a thrilling roller coaster of a novel. This smart, intimate exploration of love and family is the foundation of a beautifully constructed mystery filled with twists and turns. A must-read."
-Jean Kwok, New York Times bestselling author of Searching for Sylvie Lee

"Dave pulls off something that feels both new and familiar: a novel of domestic suspense that unnerves, then reassures. This is the antithesis of the way novels like Gone Girl or My Lovely Wife are constructed; in The Last Thing He Told Me, the surface is ugly, the situation disturbing, but almost everyone involved i...

4 Stars for this twisty domestic thriller. SUMMARY Hannah has been very happily married to Owen for about a year now. She moved cross country from NYC to a floating home community in Sausalito, CA to be with him. The only downside to her wedded bliss is the fact that Owen's sixteen year old daughter, Bailey, is not thrilled about adding Hannah to the family, and makes sure Hannah knows it. Hannah is a patient woman, she is willing to take things slowly and wait for Bailey to come around. One day, Hannah turns on the news and sees her husbands company in the headlines. His boss is being arrested for fraud and is seems many employees may have been involved in the fraud. A lot of people are angry and many have lost huge sums of money. In fact, Owen's boss is even being compared to Bernie Madoff and Kenneth Lay. Upon seeing the news, Hannah begins trying to contact Owen but she cannot get in touch with him. Finally, she receives a note from Owen that simply says, "Protect her." And he leaves Bailey a large sum of money and a note saying "You know what matters about me.” It's not a lot to go on nor is any of it much comfort. One thing Hannah knows is that Owen wouldn't run away and abandon Bailey unless there was a reason bigger than just being caught up in a scandal. There had to be more to it. Then, when a federal marshall from Texas shows up asking questions, Hannah starts to wonder if Owen may have a connection to Texas. Hannah and Bailey are forced to cooperate and work together to try to figure out what has happened to Owen. The only thing that is clear is that Owen is not who he says he is. WHAT I LOVED I loved the pace of the story. Hannah goes from being a very normal woman to being the wife of a man who is both missing and under a cloud of suspicion in the first couple chapters of the book. Then, a couple chapters later she realizes her husband is definitely not who he says he is. It all moves quickly and none of it was what I was expecting. It seemed like it was going to be a book about one thing, but ended up being about something completely different. The whole element of Hannah and Bailey having a difficult relationship really adds to the fragility of the situation. Hannah becomes solely responsible for Bailey when they really don't have much of a rapport without Owen to help then navigate. Then, she has to continually be the one to fill Bailey in on upsetting discoveries. It's just a lot. I love the settings. I'm now obsessed with how a floating community works. Boat life in Sausalito sounds fascinating! I also LOVE it when a book is set in Texas. There are so very few and Texas is a huge state with an enormous, diverse population. I absolutely love it when Texas gets a shout out. WHAT I DIDN'T LOVE I cou...

I haven’t read a book in a while and decided it was time to get back into it. Mystery has always been a genre that I loved to read and watch. Well, this book exceeded my expectations. I couldn’t put it down, really! I finished the book in 2 days! Perfect book for a long flight or weekend of relaxation.

Great read until about the last 4 chapters. I was consumed and couldn’t put it down but was super disappointed with the ending. 4/5 for that reason.

A quick read. Would be a great beach read! I was a bit disappointed that it seemed as though Owen wanted a mother for his daughter rather than a sustainable marriage.
