The Noise: A Thriller

If you hear it, it's too late.

"A really entertaining thriller [that] like Michael Crichton . . . keeps racheting up the suspense." –Booklist

In the shadow of Mount Hood, sixteen-year-old Tennant is checking rabbit traps with her eight-year-old sister Sophie when the girls are suddenly overcome by a strange vibration rising out of the forest, building in intensity until it sounds like a deafening crescendo of screams. From out of nowhere, their father sweeps them up and drops them through a trapdoor into a storm cellar. But the sound only gets worse . . .

Editorial Reviews

"A really entertaining thriller . . like Michael Crichton (who might have written something very like this), Patterson and Barker keep ratcheting up the suspense and the sense of impending doom, until, by the end, we wish we could read faster just so we can find out what happens next."―Booklist

This is one of the most disturbing books ever I've read! It's brilliant and the information and obvious research gone into the writing of such an incident is totally rewarding of both these writers. Not being a particular lover of internet use or social media myself I found the story of this anomaly particularly horrific and possibly plausible. Very, very disturbingly brilliant.

This started off well, then it kind of got lost in too much military detail, then it got good again but then the end was such a let down. I hadn't actually realised it was the ending until I tried to get to the next page! James Patterson books used to be good. I loved the max ride books. I used to like the Alex Cross books but then they all started to feel exactly the same. The Women's Murder club books went the same way, then he introduced another kind of detective. I had hoped The Noise would be the return of the intrigue of the Max ride books, it was not! Such a disappointment
Wow!!!this book is great , full, of action, suspense, horror and I too would think this would make a great film...so watch out patterson /barker the phones won't stop ringing once Hollywood hears about this new type of horror (easy to shoot as involves people running, clutching ears, screaming etc so not too expensive to turn into a great film which I would deffo pay to see !!). It's set firstly in a wilderness village retreat where people live off the grid but after an event happens that leaves only 2 young girls unscathed the action moves to a army base and from there to several more locations. I would compare this book to the film the" happening"but in my opinion it's so much better , more action, excitement, and like with most of Patterson's/Barker books the pace of the book is well thought out though at times I too had to stop and take a breath as I felt I couldn't take the excitement. If you've never read any of Patterson/Barker collaboration then I would highly recommend reading this as I'm sure that like me you will enjoy it too.

AUGUST 2021 : 3 STARS A mysterious explosion kills thousands in the Pacific Northwest and only two young girls survive. 16 Year old Tennant and 8 year old Sophie are checking rabbit traps when they feel a vibration that builds in intensity. Their dad drops them into a storm cellar. The sound only gets worse. I'll start by saying I LOVE JD Barker. His 4MK Thriller 3-book series were all 5 star reads for me (The Fourth Monkey, the Fifth to Die and the Sixth Wicked Child). His newest standalone book, The Caller's Games ('21) was also a 5-star read. His first collaboration with James Patterson, The Coast-to-Coast Murders was a 4 star read and I'm hoping for a sequel in this series. This book starts as a "slow burn"; just enough intrigue to be eerie and tense at the same time. I think the book went on about 100 pages too long. It was very repetitive. Overall it felt like a sci-fi plot which I personally don't like. Well done writing but if there's a book 2, I will not be reading. I gave this book a generous 3 Stars.

Yes, I pride myself in my love of books and reading. For example I have been reading SK from Bangor, Maine since I was 15 years old. My daughter is an avid reader after me. Kiss the Girls, Along Came...all the big JP titles, years ago, but only recently had i picked back up a JP book (2 years as a receptionist has u going thru your reading list quite quickly) I started with The President is Missing, then the Presidents Daughter, and now, The Noise. This book was so exciting and it first I didn't like the direction it was going,, I thought , toward I guess you could say the spiritual realm? Very sneaky, Mr. Patterson indeed. I won't produce any spoilers here...very clever, creative, and heart! I loved the ending, not the death or tragedy to humanity, how some justice does come. Offers a lot to think about and take heed. Are our lives a bit full of stuff we don't even need?
