The Story of King Arthur and His Knights (Barnes & Noble Children's Leatherbound Classics) (Barnes & Noble Leatherbound Children's Classics)

New, and pristine. See scans and description. New York: Barnes & Noble, Inc. / Sterling Publishing Co., Inc., 2016. The Story of King Arthur and His Knights (Barnes & Noble Children's Leatherbound Classics Edition), written and illustrated by the great Howard Pyle. 54 color illustrations by Pyle, many of them full-page. Octavo, purple bonded leather boards with silver, gilt and black designs and imprinting (cover by Spencer Charles), pattern design endpapers, All Edges Silver, silver page-marker ribbon. New, pristine and flawless throughout. See all scans. Removed from publisher's shrink wrap for scanning and description; currently in sealed storage, on premises. See all scans. A beautiful decorative edition of Howard Pyle's re-telling of Arthurian for children and young adults (like me, at least at heart), thoroughly illustrated in color with Pyle's timeless illustrations. Not just for kids; extraordinarily handsome on the shelf or the coffee table. Just don't spill coffee on it. Ships in a new, sturdy, protective box, of course - not a bag. L101

Great literature, to my mind, should teach and entertain. This does both. It teaches positive morals--not too conservative or liberal, but a nice peace between the two. Religionists, lunatics, women, old legends, little people, heroic deeds and values, romantic pining, spectacular magic ... are represented. If you want boredom and disturbance, read contemporary literature. If you want fantasy at its best (I even read that this inspired greats like Lloyd Alexander and J.R.R. Tolkien) read Howard Pyle. True, it is only Part One of Four. I am writing this review, begging of Barnes & Noble and elsewhere to start republishing the entire quartet. I previously downloaded all four books from places like ManyBooks.net. The four amaze me. First, I downloaded them for free, being public domain. Second, Mr. Pyle is an American writer who may hold his own with C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. Third, the Arthurian legends are more universable and, therefore, more accessible, in a way, to a worldwide audience. From start to finish I was enchanted and look forward to re-reading it again and again. In fact, I reformatted the entire quartet, added back in all his illustrations for it, and printed them out on Lulu.com. I now have created my own boxed set of this incredible masterpiece. But what is a masterpiece, really? I must conclude, then, I myself not understanding great literature, that I like and recommend this book. Book 1: The Story of King Arthur and His Knights Book 2: The Story of the Champions of the Round Table Book 3: The Story of Sir Launcelot and His Companions Book 4: The Story of the Grail and the Passing of Arthur

Absolutely terrible edition of this book. I love Howard Pyle's black and white ink drawings, and was confident that that was what was in this edition because that's what was shown on the 'look inside' feature. NOT TRUE. This edition has awful, colorized versions of Pyle's originals. When you click on 'look inside' there is a note that pops up saying that the version you're looking at is the paperback version, and what you'll be purchasing is the hardcover. However, nowhere does it further explain that the illustrations will be so drastically different. As to any textual errors, I can't speak to that as I didn't even bother to read a word. I knew I'd be returning this as soon as I saw the awful artwork. What a shame!

An old family favorite. The kindle edition is as good as the printed edition. It is easy to listen to with the voice to text technology. I highly recommend it.
