Thousand Autumns: Qian Qiu (Novel) Vol. 1

The beloved danmei/Boys' Love wuxia novel series from China that inspired the donghua (animated series) streaming in English!

In this historical tale, a Daoist martial artist must begin a journey of healing and self-reflection as he resists the temptations of the powerful leader of a demonic sect.

Yan Wushi, leader of the demonic Huanyue sect, is a master cultivator, a brilliant strategist, and an incurable cynic. In his philosophy, every human heart is ruled by cruelty and selfishness. Anyone who believes otherwise is either a liar or a fool.

Enter the humble Shen Qiao, leader of the Daoist sect at Xuandu Mountain. He is both gracious and charitable, and exactly the type of do-gooder that Yan Wushi despises.

When Shen Qiao suffers a shocking loss in a duel and is left for dead, Yan Wushi happens upon him and concocts a plan to teach him about the wretchedness of humanity. He'll take Shen Qiao under his wing, test the limits of his faith, and lure him into demonic cultivation. After all, it is easy to remain righteous atop a mountain peak that touches the heavens. But a thousand autumns toiling on the blood-soaked earth will break any man.

This Chinese historical fiction tale about powerful martial artists (wuxia) built around the desire between two men (danmei) inspired a beloved animated series (donghua). The Seven Seas English-language edition will include exclusive, all-new covers and interior illustrations.

The book came in good conditions and fast :) All arts are just so beautiful, the history is endearing with a slowborn relation between the principal characters. So excited to re-read again this great novel and look forward to the next one.

Rating is entirely on how the book looks and the condition in which I received it, as I haven't read it yet. I first saw this in B+N, but since it was wrapped, I had no idea what it was like inside, nor was I able to get it at the time. Thankfully I was able to preorder it on Amazon, which I'm super happy I did! Especially since it was cheaper and the premise sounds really interesting~ The artwork throughout is rather nice as well. I especially love these two beginning illustrations so much. X3 Also appreciate the historical primer in the back, along with the glossary and character info. Looking forward to reading it! 😀

I'm glad to see many people enjoyed this book so much, but one thing I have to mention is that this book is Wuxia not Xianxia! If the background of the friction does not involve the ghost world and the god world is not xianxia( Eg. Heaven official blessing is xianxia). This book only have human world, so it is Wuxia.

NO spoilers!! This book was released Tuesday and I’ve already finished reading it. Both the novel and the Donghua (anime) is fantastic. It was just great to have faces with the characters. It can be a bit confusing only bc there’s a lot going on- just like any other novel but from someone to enjoys and reads this type of genre I was able to follow and understand it perfectly! Also there’s so many comedic moments too I’m dying laughing. This story is up there with the other popular BL Wuxia like MDZS, TGCF and SVSSS. All I’m hoping for is for them to do a comic version and it would be complete!! Buy this book!!!!

As an avid reader of BL, Yaoi, and anything gay at all I am super happy to report to my like minded kin that this book and its appearance are complimentary matches to other such BL titles like Heaven Official's Blessing, Husky and His white Cat Shizun, and Grandmaster of demonic Cultivation. The artwork is very well done and reminds me of a more classic yaoi anime or manga style. Like, the kind that was sexy not the kind with the distorted faces and expressions. The look they chose for Yan Wushi is more a direct reflection of what he is in the book rather then the animated adaptation of this story which had him look rather flamboyantly gay. More trickster-ish attractive rather then devilishly handsome. Though Yan Wushi does love tricks, mind games, and words play. In the actual novel he has a bit more sexy villain or diabolical looking vibe to him. Which I think that artist captured very nicely! This more classically handsome masculine appearance pairs well with our little Shen Qiao who is as pretty as a percaline doll. Shen looks very similar to his animated counterpart but that because the animated design for Shen was more directly taken from the book then Yan's was. So, in summery, the artwork is spot on a perfect for this type of story. I love it when BL stories get more anime style artwork. It's just a cherry on top! NOW! On to a review of the book itself. Thousand Autumns is a story about a betrayed man, Shen Qiao, who despite facing considerable hardships designed to test his compassion and convictions still remains true to his ethics, morals, and hope in humanity. He is the type of protagonist that you like to root for and protect because he's just such a good person through and through. Yan Wushi being his love interest is interesting because the beginning of their relationship is founded on the disbelief that Yan has no hope in humanity what so ever. Thus they are a couple comprised of opposites and that does make for an interesting dynamic as the story progresses. However I would warn my fellow fangirls and boy that this story, unlike some others, has no sex in it and the two do not officially get together. Its unfortune, but the story is very well done regardless of the lack of sex and is very much worth the read. Beside their is considerable flirting so their relationship is not subtext but actual text. All in all a VERY good read and if you already have other similar titles add this to your collection as well.
