Tress of the Emerald Sea
#1 New York Times Bestselling author Brandon Sanderson brings us deeper into the Cosmere universe with a rollicking, riveting tale that will appeal to fans of The Princess Bride.
The only life Tress has known on her island home in an emerald-green ocean has been a simple one, with the simple pleasures of collecting cups brought by sailors from faraway lands and listening to stories told by her friend Charlie. But when his father takes him on a voyage to find a bride and disaster strikes, Tress must stow away on a ship and seek the Sorceress of the deadly Midnight Sea. Amid the spore oceans where pirates abound, can Tress leave her simple life behind and make her own place sailing a sea where a single drop of water can mean instant death?

Once again, Brandon Sanderson writes an incredible story. It starts out with a Princess Bride feel on an incredibly imagined world. It is narrated by Hoid, who is also part of the story. It's a tale of true love and determination. Another one to keep on my shelf.

What an absolutely amazing and exquisite story! Everything about it is magical and otherworldly, which is good since it includes magic and takes place other than our world. Am I right? While it's not traditional Sanderson, it perfectly captures everything I love about his writing. I was transported to the Emerald Sea and sailed along with Tress and her eclectic companions. And the illustrations! I want them all framed and hanging on my wall. So gorgeous and well done, I felt as if I was peering into the world Sanderson has created instead of merely looking at a drawing. This was most definitely one of my favorite reads of the year, and in my top reads ever. I'm excited to see what comes next in Secret Project #2.

Reading this book is good for your soul. Though the heroine’s quest in this story is not particularly original, it is certainly captivating. The world building is finely detailed and the spore sea is a character you will not forget. A place that is both achingly beautiful and nightmarish. The ship’s crew are a mixture of the strange, repellent and good-natured and as such are entirely relatable. The humor is both silly and terribly wise. The narrator of the story intersperses the action with asides that are really the best part of the book. How do you lead a good life? How does facing your fears change you? The answers proposed here, as we see our heroine evolve and change, are not preachy, just simple and honest. On top of all this there is a touching love story, plot twists, immortal beings and a zombie doctor. What more could you ask for?

This was such a fun read! Tress of the Emerald Sea is a <i>"grown-up"</i> fairy tale narrated by Hoid, with interesting characters and a sweet and strong female lead. At first I wasn't too sure I would come to like the story but as it progressed, I enjoyed the characters and plot more and more. At the end, I just though about how interesting it would be to experience Sanderson brain. The world was quite original and the beautiful drawings were quite helpfull to picture bits of it. This is going to be a great read to repeat with my kids when they are older.

Brandon Sanderson is such a good writer! If I were to summarize the plot, you would perhaps be skeptical that it could all come together. But, then again, it is Brandon Sanderson at the helm. Key assets to the story are an interesting and well-developed world, an engaging heroine, the Dougs, the cryptic narrator, the humor, a talking rat, and much more. The tone is somewhere between The Princess Bride and a Tiffany Aching Terry Pratchett book, but it is never derivative. The page count is long (not a surprise for a Brandon Sanderson novel) but he pages turn quickly, and it does not seem long (also not a surprise fir a Brandon Sanderson novel.) While it’s easy to just point to the humorous nature of the big adventure, there is substance to the story with well-developed characters who grow and evolve through the book. It is a book that would be suitable for a strong young reader (my boys would have liked it) and it is complex enough to be entertaining for an adult reader. I paid full price for the Kindle edition of this book and the ratio of price to entertainment value was still good.
