There is Miriam's former housekeeper, Shelly Dyer, who left the family's employment years ago under mysterious circumstances. There are Miriam's children: Theodora, who gave up everything to assume the role of caretaker; Diana, who seems just a little too eager to inherit her share of the estate; and Richard, whose longtime grudge against his mother has curdled into gleeful contempt at her deterioration.
But it's Delphine who comes in for the greatest scrutiny when they learn the shocking news that Miriam's will cut off her children, leaving her granddaughter almost everything.

Marvelous atmospheric novel! Kept me reading greedily and wishing I could continue indefinitely... Characters well-developed, some parts almost poetic. I can't praise this book highly enough.

Leaves her care facility to spend the Christmas holidays with her family at her home in Bar Harbor. On Christmas Eve she disappears. Told in the past, when she was a teenager, a young woman, and a wife, and in during the Christmas holidays with her 3 children, and her grand-daughter. A good story. Visit the past with her as a head strong young lady, marrying a man that is below her in social standing, but getting her own way with her father. Understanding the annual rite of walking across the frozen ice to the visit the cabin and bearskin rug which marked their beginning. And ultimately her end. Also the story of the grand-daughter, and her struggling relationships - with her mother and her romantic relationships.
