After Death

A modern-day Lazarus is humanity's last hope in a breathtaking novel about the absolute powers of good and evil by Dean Koontz, the #1 New York Times bestselling master of suspense.

Michael Mace, head of security at a top-secret research facility, opens his eyes in a makeshift morgue twenty-four hours following an event in which everyone perished―including him and his best friend, Shelby Shrewsberry.

Having awakened with an extraordinary ability unlike anything he―or anyone else―has ever imagined, Michael is capable of being as elusive as a ghost. He sets out to honor his late friend by helping Nina Dozier and her son, John, whom Shelby greatly admired. Although what Michael does for Nina is life changing, his actions also evoke the wrath of John's father, a member of one of the most violent street gangs in Los Angeles.

But an even greater threat is descending: the Internal Security Agency's most vicious assassin, Durand Calaphas. Calaphas will stop at nothing to get his man. If Michael dies twice, he will not live a third time.

From the tarnished glamour of Beverly Hills to the streets of South Central to a walled estate in Rancho Santa Fe, only Michael can protect Nina and John―and ensure that light survives in a rapidly darkening world.

It's a classic Dean Koontz story. It was fun and fantastical, but as I have read everything by Mr. Koontz it was not an unexpected journey. It certainly shows us hope for a better future for mankind, which is why I have it 4* rather then 3 or less.

Peter has done it again. Filled my heart and soul with terror and then unexpectedly lifted then up. This book was really amazing as well as terrifying. His portrayal of soulless evil in the guise of governmental unilateral power that is entirely believable is incredibly frightening. It makes me wish that there was a possibility for the singularity. Somebody to show the world how to be better. The only thing I would change is calling people that don't notice or recognize on the evil perpetrators worldview as extras should have been NPCs.

So many authors offer us a glimpse of the future, often grounded in historic tales. This glimpse is the future I dream of. Sad that it is unlikely to happen, but unlikely isn’t impossible and I will take hope whenever it is offered. In a day when books about singularity appear often, this one offers a different version or rather, a different vision of it. I am purposefully being vague on details of the story because you just need to read it. Dean Koontz has had numerous excellent books, but I’ll say it again:this is my all time favorite. Please read it and the. Imagine what life could be like, if only…

I have been a fan in the early writings of Knootz. Whenever I saw a new book released I would purchase knowing it would keep me not wanting to put down the book. This story may seem impossible but consider the AI we are hearing about, consider our governments unchecked powers. I think Knootz sees the things we think are impossible and makes them possibilities. His characters are realistic. Mike Mace, Nina and son John. It's a rivitating story and you can't wait from chapter to chapter what's next? Mike is like a modern day Robin Hood and as much as he hates violence he takes care of enemies that are threats to his friends, and knowing he is saving at I the risk of his own demise. Read this story if you want to see a possible future.and maybe a way to save it. Knootz will never disappoint his readers.

It’s all about power and pride Many of Koontz’s books have been about the hunger for power in one form or another. This one is no different, but the power hunger is not only from the upper echelons of society, wealthy attorneys and corrupt government officials but also about the street gangs and gangbangers. It’s an interesting comparison. The book deals with AI (artificial intelligence), hunger for power and money, sex trafficking and the crude treatment of women not only from the upper echelons but from the street gangs as well. Surprisingly, the novel is full of crude language and sexually explicit implications which have never been in a Koontz novel before. These usages are offensive but very realistic coming from the homeys and street gangbangers. Wondering how Mr. Koontz did his research for this realistic language? The gangbanger story is a novel idea from my perspective of looking at Mr. Koontz’s prior books. I was a little disappointed that the story of the gang did not seem to have a conclusion. Thankfully, there was no profanity in the novel. There is only a little humor in this book. I laughed aloud at the Macarena music episode. The end of the book was rewarding and did offer some hope. Also, what would a Koontz book be without a golden retriever....so, yes, there's Lucy the golden This book deserves a second installment to make it seem complete.
