Barefoot: A Novel
From marriage, infidelity, and the mayhem of motherhood to scandal, tragedy, and illness-three women seek peace and comfort in Nantucket as they cope with life's challenges.
Three women-burdened with small children, unwieldy straw hats, and some obvious emotional issues-tumble onto the Nantucket airport tarmac one hot June day. Vicki is trying to sort through the news that she has a serious illness. Her sister, Brenda, has just left her job after being caught in an affair with a student. And their friend Melanie, after seven failed in vitro attempts, is pregnant at last-but only after learning that her husband is having an affair. They have come to escape, enjoy the sun, and relax in Nantucket's calming air. But into the house, into their world, steps twenty-two-year-old Josh Flynn.
Barefoot weaves these four lives together in a story with enthralling sweep and scope-a novel that is as fun and memorable and bittersweet as that one perfect day of summer.

I loved this book from start to finish. The author took many opportunities to allow you to get to know each character, not just one or two main ones as others do. As the end of the summer drew near, it was very hard not to get teary and totally enmeshed with the story. It leaves you thinking about the lessons that they each learned about the strength and weaknesses of love and family, and of course, dreaming of booking a house on Nantucket Island next summer.

This was my first Elin Hilderbrand book but won't be my last. I just finished "Summer People" and signed on to order another of her books. In "Barefoot," the characters are people I'd like to hang out with at a Nantucket Beach party. Their travails felt real and some of the characters added a dash of excitement. Josh Flynn made me think of a very young Matthew McConaughey; not just handsome but introspective and interesting. I enjoyed all of the female characters and the transformation a summer at the beach brought to their lives. This is a fast, interesting and extremely enjoyable read!

When I started this book I wasn’t expecting to really be invested in it. These characters are so real and honest it’s impossible not to believe in the story. Life happens in the most messy way and we all find ourselves exactly where we are meant to be.

What a heartfelt story about family, friends, and Abby chance encounter that changes lives. This was quite the page turner! I didn’t want it to end and yet, I couldn’t wait!
