Deserter: Junji Ito Story Collection

An ever-increasing malice. A mind-numbing terror. The seeds of horror are sown in this collection of Junji Ito's earliest works.

A vengeful family hides an army deserter for eight years after the end of World War II, cocooning him in a false reality where the war never ended. A pair of girls look alike, but they're not twins. And a boy's nightmare threatens to spill out into the real world…

This hauntingly strange story collection showcases a dozen of Junji Ito's earliest works from when he burst onto the horror scene, sowing fresh seeds of terror.

This isn't some misunderstanding because it's manga. The cover is upside down and the front cover with the title is directly next to the end of the comic upside down. I don't really know how I feel given misprints are interesting but it makes me question the quality control of the product.

This book collects 12 different short stories from the master of horror manga, Junji Ito. The collection contains the following works: Bio House Face Thief Where the Sandman Lives The Devil's Logic The Long Hair in the Attic Scripted Love The Reanimator's Sword A Father's Love Unendurable Labyrinth Village of the Siren Bullied Deserter Fans of Junji Ito will probably enjoy this collection, and many of the stories are apparently earlier works of his that might not be as easy to find elsewhere. All of these are in black and white, and are great examples of Junji Ito's trademark artistic style. If you are unfamiliar with Junji Ito then you might want to look into some examples of his work before getting this; as it is a very specific type of body horror/psychological horror style that some people enjoy but others might not. Long time fans though should have an idea what to expect, and probably won't be disappointed with this collection.

Not the best Ito collection but some of them are very good. The last 2 may be some of my new favorites, especially the title story. Very good twist.

You can really see how his art and story telling has evolved in all his collections. At first, when I started read this book, I was like, who the hell made this? This ain't ito's work, can't be! But it definitely is. I say that because his characters looked a bit different in the beginning, compared to Tomie etc. Now, storywise, these aren't his greatest, but they're still fun to read. I particularly liked The Deserter which was pretty messed up, and Bully. And my cat enjoys the smell of this book, as do I lol. I tried very hard not to finish this book so fast because I wanted to read it over the holidays while I'm away with family but no matter how thick this book is, I just found myself closer and closer to the end. :(
