Drowning: The Rescue of Flight 1421 (A Novel)
"The first terrific thriller of 2023." -James Patterson * "Spectacular…Taut, gripping." -Kirkus Reviews (starred review) * "Reads like Apollo 13 underwater." -Don Winslow * "Masterful." -Patricia Cornwell
Flight attendant turned New York Times bestselling author T. J. Newman returns with an edge-of-your-seat thriller about a commercial jetliner that crashes into the ocean and sinks to the bottom with passengers trapped inside-and the extraordinary rescue operation to save them.
Six minutes after takeoff, Flight 1421 crashes into the Pacific Ocean. During the evacuation, an engine explodes and the plane is flooded. Those still alive are forced to close the doors-but it's too late. The plane sinks to the bottom with twelve passengers trapped inside.
More than two hundred feet below the surface, engineer Will Kent and his eleven-year-old daughter Shannon are waist-deep in water and fighting for their lives.
Their only chance at survival is an elite rescue team on the surface led by professional diver Chris Kent-Shannon's mother and Will's soon-to-be ex-wife-who must work together with Will to find a way to save their daughter and rescue the passengers from the sealed airplane, which is now teetering on the edge of an undersea cliff.
There's not much time.
There's even less air.
With devastating emotional power and heart-stopping suspense, Drowning is an unforgettable thriller about a family's desperate fight to save themselves and the people trapped with them-against impossible odds.

I’ve heard that this book will be made into a movie, and I definitely understand why. The premise is perfect for the screen: Likable characters, being trapped inside an airplane under water and the nearly impossible task of getting the passengers out of there. For the most part I loved the book. The only thing that made it less perfect for ME was all the tech stuff, which left my mind wandering and frankly made me feel a bit stupid. When I looked past however, there was so much going on that I still thought about what would happen next when I couldn’t read. It was also emotional, especially segments dedicated to Will and his daughter. There were moments when the characters realized what is important, and you just felt for them in their predicament. I also liked how capable and intelligent Will was. It was obvious that he would stop at nothing to save his little girl. Her mother also has a central role, and her ingenuity was impressive. The last chapters were intense. So much was going on, and the author even tightened the suspense by a storm that also made the conditions on land challenging. At some points I wanted to pray, and I was tense from all the anticipation. I could almost not stomach the intensity of it all.
Drowning was an action-packed thriller, and I am not surprised to see that Jerry Bruckheimer is trying to option this as a movie. It will be the blockbuster action movie of the year when it’s released. This is a survival story at its heart, but it is also about surviving loss and continuing to live as Will, his soon to be ex-wife Chris and Shannon are still in grief over the loss of Shannon’s sister. The tension of their story added drama and depth to the plot. Flight 1421 loses all engines and plummets to the ocean after takeoff in Hawaii, and from then on the story is focused on the survival of its passengers while also detailing the backstory of a family drowning in grief. T.J. Newman was a flight attendant and used her knowledge and experience to rivet readers with a healthy amount of survival protocols, science, and engineering – Will is the engineer trapped in the plane on the ocean bottom while Chris has special qualifications and ideas that may rescue them all. You may see where this is going, but it is a great ride – I confess I read this and finished it on a flight to Florida. This was a good story that I am sure translates well to the big screen. I give it a 3.5 out of 5 stars. The novel had a solid, if somewhat stereotypical cast of characters. I enjoyed the engineering aspects of survival. I read it in one sitting – fast thrill ride of the summer.

Characters were well-formed and had depth. There was a lot of tension but it was more realistic than you would expect. I really enjoyed this, both the ups and the downs.

This one started off with a massive "bang" and I wondered if the suspense and trepidation could be sustained through the whole book... Well, it was and then some my sincere gratitude and gratitude to a superlative author for a thoroughly enjoyable novel!
