Hero on a Mission: A Path to a Meaningful Life
New York Times bestselling author Donald Miller shares the plan that led him to turn his life around.
There are four characters in every story: The victim, the villain, the hero, and the guide. These four characters live inside us. If we play the victim, we're doomed to fail. If we play the villain, we will not create genuine bonds. But if we play the hero or guide, our lives will flourish. The hard part is being self-aware enough to know which character we are playing.
In this book, Donald will use his own experiences to help you recognize if the character you are currently surfacing is helping you experience a life of meaning. He breaks down the transformational, yet practical, plan that took him from slowly giving up to rapidly gaining a new perspective of his own life's beauty and meaning, igniting his motivation, passion, and productivity, so you can do the same.
The lessons in this book will teach you how to:
Help you discover when you are playing the victim and villain.Create a simple life plan that will bring clarity and meaning to your goals ahead.Take control of your life by choosing to be the hero in your story.Cultivate a sense of creativity about what your life can be.Move beyond just being productive to experiencing a deep sense of meaning.Donald Miller will help you identify the many chances you have of being the hero in your life, and the times when you are falling into the trap of becoming the victim. He will guide you in developing a unique plan that will speak to the challenges you currently face so you, too, can find the fulfillment you have been searching for in your life and work.

I couldn't be more grateful for this inspiring read. Donald Miller not only nails the path to a meaningful life, but as with everything he does he makes the path extremely simple. And simple means that transforming our lives to have meaning is attainable for anybody. The book outlines steps to follow and illustrates those through inspirational stories. One of the first thing I did upon finishing the book was getting copies for my children. The only thing I wish is that I have had a chance to read this when I was younger.

Picked up the new book “Hero on A Mission” on release day yesterday. I’m a little over half-way through and have one thing to say. Thank you Donald Miller! It’s motivating and inspiring but most importantly instructional. My favorite quote so far: “My ideas could be wrong. My attitude could be toxic. The problem in my world may very well be me.”

Started reading yesterday and early this morning and though I our company is already familiar and well-steeped in StoryBrand and BMSU the first Act has already drawn us in. Read to my 11 year old and she could even see places in her school work where she has been playing the Victim/Villain. Incredible!!! Everyone is getting a copy.

Donald Miller’s latest book, Hero On A Mission, will get you unstuck. Too many of us have accepted fate or chance as the writer of our story. As a result, we drift and live a much less compelling story than we could otherwise enjoy. Miller explains that nearly every story — including our own lives — has four main characters: villains, victims, heroes, and guides. The key to a fulfilling life is to choose to become a hero who becomes a guide. If that were all there were to this book, it would be valuable, since the choice to act heroically is not all that well-known. But what makes this book a goldmine is Miller’s including a suite of life planning, goal-setting, and daily planning tools that will unlock the treasure house of your own life. Full disclosure: I attended a Donald Miller webinar on productivity — an early version of this material— over two years ago, and I can vouch for the effectiveness of these tools. I use them daily. This is a book that I recommend wholeheartedly. Buy it, read it, and put it to work. The people in your life will thank you!

I wish SO much this book had been around when I was 30 or 40 or even 50. (I’m thinking my life would be vastly different today.) Even so, I’m extremely grateful to have it now. Hero On A Mission Is for everyone who wakes up feeling restless and blah. It ingeniously points the way out of a humdrum existence and into a more meaningful life. Warm and practical, HOAM is packed with profound insights. And it’s served up with Miller’s trademark humor. I’ll be pondering this book (and implementing and recommending it) for a long, long time.
