I Color Myself Different

An inspiring story of identity and self-esteem from celebrated athlete and activist Colin Kaepernick.

When Colin Kaepernick was five years old, he was given a simple school assignment: draw a picture of yourself and your family. What young Colin does next with his brown crayon changes his whole world and worldview, providing a valuable lesson on embracing and celebrating his Black identity through the power of radical self-love and knowing your inherent worth.

I Color Myself Differentis a joyful ode to Black and Brown lives based on real events in young Colin's life that is perfect for every reader's bookshelf. It's a story of self-discovery, staying true to one's self, and advocating for change... even when you're very little!

I am an adoptive, Caucasian mom of a Chinese daughter. She is an adult now, but this book's message of positivity and inclusiveness would have made it tops on our list of books to read together. I read it now anyway - it is awesome!

I would give this book to every kid I know. It's a delightful, gorgeously illustrated story that looks into the thoughts and experience of a young boy, but stands in for so many of our childhood experiences. It talks through a moment of self-doubt to the courageous and triumphant conclusion, and it also touches on the issue of adoption. I cannot say enough lovely things about this book, and I will also never forgive the Seattle Seahawks for not picking Kaperniek up when they had the chance. BIG mistake, Coach.

Just read this wonderful story to my adopted 6 year old son who happens to be a different skin tone. He immediately made connections about the characters in the story and to our family. Really love how the book is written and how it is illustrated. Bravo Mr. Kapernick

Omg, yes! This is officially my new modern favorite children’s book. My son read it one time, then immediately brushed his teeth and asked Daddy to read it to him again in bed. Some highlights from the book: First, the empowering message of being different, being brown and magnificent! Secondly, the language is perfect for children and it has some advanced vocabulary that they can learn about. Thirdly, the illustrations are downright moving. I love the fact that this is based on a true story and ends with a letter to the reader. Colin’s true artwork is included in the back and we had a lovely time giggling about our favorite ones. He learned more about adoption as well. I can’t say enough about this book. There are so many reasons to love Colin, this book is just one more!
