I remember reading all of the Little Sister Books as a kid and they sure hit different when you read them with your child as an adult. I love how the author tackles real issues that kids face with genuine honesty and no attempt to make everything all rainbows and sunshine. In this book, Karen is dealing with wanting to have a birthday that includes both her (divorced) families. It shows the parents arguing and shows her raw emotions in a way a child can understand empathize. That’s what Ann Martin did best, she spoke to kids without talking down to them, and her stories are still relatable today. I loved this book and I enjoyed watching my seven- year-olds face as she took in a different perspective than her own and learned sympathy. Some people have reservations about graphic novels replacing standard text for kids. I was once one of those kids. But anything that builds a love for reading and keeps kids off screens is a win for me. These still have a lot of reading involved and my daughter learns bigger words with each book. Can’t wait for the next one to come out!
