Legacy: A Novel

#1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts presents Legacy, a new novel of a mother and a daughter, of ambition and romance, and of a traumatic past reawakened by a terrifying threat…

Adrian Rizzo was seven when she met her father for the first time. That was the day he nearly killed her―before her mother, Lina, stepped in.

Soon after, Adrian was dropped off at her grandparents' house in Maryland, where she spent a long summer drinking lemonade, playing with dogs, making a new best friend―and developing the stirrings of a crush on her friend's ten-year-old brother. Lina, meanwhile, traveled the country promoting her fitness brand and turning it into a billion-dollar business. There was no point in dwelling on the past.

A decade later, Adrian has created her own line of yoga and workout videos, following in Lina's footsteps but intent on maintaining creative control. And she's just as cool-headed and ambitious as her mother. They aren't close, but they're cordial―as long as neither crosses the other.

But while Lina dismisses the death threats that Adrian starts getting as a routine part of her daughter's growing celebrity, Adrian can't help but find the vicious rhymes unsettling. Year after year, they keep arriving―the postmarks changing, but the menacing tone the same. They continue after she returns to Maryland and becomes reacquainted with Raylan, her childhood crush, all grown up and as gorgeously green-eyed as ever. Sometimes it even seems like the terrifying messages are indeed routine, like nothing will come of them. Until the murders start, and the escalation begins…

Editorial Reviews

"Once again, Roberts effectively parlays her literary superpower into creating compelling, all-too-human characters and crafting plots composed of realistic domestic details and unflinching suspense. Legacy is another page-turning hit for supreme storyteller Roberts." ―Booklist

Roberts' strength has always been her ability to create likable, complex characters, and this crew is even more appealing than most―they are never whiny in insecurity or snobbish in success; rather, they provide unwavering support for each other's ups and downs. Good, because it’s Nora Roberts, but somehow not as good as usual. I think because I found the characters initially unsympathetic and not particularly absorbing. It improved as it went along, but definitely not her best.

As always an amazing read. I couldn't put it down and loved the story. There were so many parts of the story that made me laugh till I cried and parts that were so emotional that I couldn't stop crying. Need a box of tissues whilst reading this!

I don’t know how Ms Roberts does it, she’s been writing bestsellers for around forty years and still manages to knock them out of the park. Yes, her characters can come off as too perfect living the prefect life, apart from the obligatory serpent in the garden. But they are always interesting people who’s lives you quickly become emotionally invested in. There’s a rhythm and flow to her writing that’s magical. Her characters are always so engaging, Ms Roberts knows how to make you care about them, and although they lead charmed lives they still suffer loss and grief, because bad things can and do happen to good people. she’s especially good at writing from the child’s perspective. The world she creates in one in which you could live quite happily yourself, whether they’re set in a big city or a small town. Her books are always a must have for me. The J.D.Robb series being my top go to read.

I love Nora Roberts. I always pre-order, even though these days they are pretty formulaic. You can overlook that normally because the characters are likeable and often really funny. This book felt like it skated over the surface in most elements of the story and the main relationship felt a bit "light". I always re- read her stories and will give this one another go, but suspect I will then just tuck this one away.
