This book sucked me in with suspense, won my heart with character, and then creeped me the hell out. It has stuck with me for months yet. Our one copy is well worn, as my daughter has snuck it out to her friends with a, "You will NOT BELIEVE this book!" And it lands back at the house a week later as every one of them read it straight through. Something stirs in me when I reread it. Phenomenal work.

NB: I purchased this book somewhere else before it was available on Amazon in the US. This is a wonderful Gothic novel with engaging characters. Ms. Ward's prose is just so beautiful to read, and this book is just absorbing. I cannot recommend it enough. I did read The Girl from Rawblood, also excellent, and I'm eagerly awaiting the next one, The Last House on Needless Street.

Winner of the 2018 Shirley Jackson award! This book is like The Wasp Factory with a flourish of cult craziness and a good helping of We Have Always Lived in the Castle. If that sounds like something you’d be interested in, then don’t bother reading any further. What a weird, wild, and wonderful book. I’ve never read anything quite like it. The plot is a before and after: a fever-dream rendition of the past where young Evelyn describes her strange life on a secluded island in a damp castle with her domineering Uncle and siblings and what happens after, narrated by Dinah. The tipping point is a monstrous scene that opens the book—if you read that far, you’ll be hooked—but everything is not as it appears. Eve and Dinah see and remember things differently: whose version is correct, who is telling the truth? I loved this book. Some books (I call them beach reads) you can just breeze through without really thinking about. They are still fun to read, but don’t offer a lot of substance or anything for your mind to sink its hooks into. This is a book you have to grapple with, really read and think about as you’re reading, but if you’re willing to put in the effort, it’s so worth it. I recommend this one. I will definitely be seeking out Ward’s first book, The Girl from Rawblood (or just Rawblood in the UK), which has not only been recommended to me by some readers I trust but sounds just as intriguing and gothic as this one.
Cat After Dark
Catriona Ward's first book LITTLE EVE is a soon to be released in America Gothic psychological thriller that gave her her writing beginning. Replace the word "psychological" with "those people are batsh*t nuts" and you have the story in a nutshell. It was FANTASTIC! Another place, another time, people are the same, aren't they? Always there, always taking advantage. And Ward's crating of the story was perfection. Once you figured out what was who and where was what, she took a turn. And then another. Scotland will never be the same. Add this to your tbr now.

Another amazing novel from the author of Rawblood! I could not put this book down and ended up staying awake way too late to finish it. Once again, my advice is to let the story carry you along and don’t try to predict the ending. I usually have trouble picturing people and settings in my mind, and so I usually skip over long descriptive paragraphs that don’t advance the story, but this author does a wonderful job of describing the landscape and environment while weaving it into the story. And I finally had an image in my mind!
