Deadly Pleasures

"Rock Paper Scissors is a perfectly-plotted thriller that hooked me from the opening scene. A really gripping story with clever switch-back twists that kept me off-balance (checking over my shoulder!) the whole nail-biting way. A scissor-sharp portrayal of a marriage on the rocks. Atmospheric, entertaining and clever."
―Philippa East, author of Little White Lies

"Deliciously dark . . . An exquisitely constructed, hugely entertaining thriller."
―Catherine Ryan Howard, author of The Nothing Man

"This one's already been optioned, but I'd encourage everyone to read it before it heads to the screen…The two dovetail towards an explosive conclusion that leaves us with just enough ambiguity to linger in the reader's mind long after finishing."
―CrimeReads

"This complicated gothic thriller of dueling spouses and homicidal writers is cleverly plotted and neatly tied up."
Kirkus

Alice Feeney is my new favourite author, and Rock Paper Scissors did not disappoint!

3.5 stars.. True fan of this author. But this book was a real disappointment for me. I held onto reading it to see if it got better since Feeney is known for grabbing the plots and keeping every part interesting but this was pretty tough to get into. The ending was good, but not nearly the suspense book I was hoping for.

What a twisty, atmospheric, and haunting read! Amelia and Adam are a married couple who take a trip a converted old chapel in a remote area of Scotland. Right from the start, the reader knows their marriage is in trouble, hanging by a thread. Adam is a workaholic screenwriter who suffers from facial blindness—he can’t see or remember people’s faces, including that of his wife. I won’t reiterate the rest of the blurb but will say this book twists and turns in ways I never saw coming. The chapel is wonderfully creepy with an old supernatural history, locked doors, a creepy wine cellar, unheated rooms, and a crumbling bell tower. The remote location is made even more ominous for its winter setting and raging snowstorm. Chapters alternate between Amelia and Adam, and another woman, Robin, a recluse in a small cottage nearby. There are also letters that Adam’s wife writes to him every year on their anniversary, and a unique spin on the game of rock, paper, scissors. This is one of those books where it’s difficult to say more without giving away spoilers. I will say that I was mesmerized from start to finish, gobsmacked by the twists, and enamored of the creepy, snowbound setting. I read late into the night to finish it, then found it disturbing, haunting, and utterly satisfying. What a winner!

Ten years of marriage. Ten years of secrets. And an anniversary they will never forget. My Thoughts: Adam and Amelia alternately narrate their stories, interspersed with letters from someone signed “wife.” The “Rock Paper Scissors” game was a familiar theme, and while it seemed playful, there was a darkness surrounding it. As we learn more and more about them and their secrets, we “meet” other characters, like Robin, who seems to live near the vacation cottage. But that cottage has so many weird aspects that we just know that nothing will end well. As the end approaches and more is revealed, I realized that I didn’t like any of the characters! There might not be a happily ever after for some of them, so the ending seemed inevitable. I was still stunned by what eventually happened. And then, even more was revealed in a final chapter. 5 stars

I really don't understand the positive reviews on this book. I kept thinking I was missing something! I never connected with the characters who seemed selfish & one-dimensional. I read through to the end & was still disappointed. Should have asked for a refund earlier in the game as this was not worth my Kindle purchase price.
