Lincoln Conspiracy

Brad Meltzer and Josh Mensch, the bestselling authors of The First Conspiracy, which covers the secret plot against George Washington, now turn their attention to a little-known, but true story about a failed assassination attempt on the sixteenth president in The Lincoln Conspiracy.

Everyone knows the story of Abraham Lincoln's assassination in 1865, but few are aware of the original conspiracy to kill him four years earlier in 1861, literally on his way to Washington, D.C., for his first inauguration.

The conspirators were part of a white supremacist secret society that didn't want an abolitionist in the White House. They planned an elaborate scheme to assassinate the President-elect in Baltimore as Lincoln's inauguration train passed through, en route to the nation's capital. The plot was investigated by famed detective Allan Pinkerton, who infiltrated the group with undercover agents, including Kate Warne, one of the first female private detectives in America.

Had the assassination succeeded, there would have been no Lincoln Presidency and the course of the Civil War and American history would have forever been altered.

Editorial Reviews

"Takes a little-known true story about the FIRST plot to kill Abraham Lincoln and turns it into a first-rate nonfiction thriller. Filled with amazing American history, secret societies, incredible research, and a shocking conspiracy to murder Abraham Lincoln at the dawn of his presidency. A brilliant combination of edge-of-your-seat history and superb storytelling." - James L. Swanson, bestselling author of Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln's Killer

"Think you know everything about Abraham Lincoln? Well, think again. The Lincoln Conspiracy not only revitalizes history, it transforms it, turning its principal player into a flesh and blood defender of everything the republic stands for, and the target of a malevolent cabal that went awry long before the ill-fated night at Ford's Theatre. Fantastic. You'll never look at Abraham Lincoln the same way again." - Les Standiford, bestselling author of Last Train to Paradise & Meet You in Hell

"Brad Meltzer and Josh Mensch have found and rescued the harrowing story of Abraham Lincoln under assault by lurking would-be assassins (long before John Wilkes Booth). Every page is mesmerizing and eye-opening. A must-read!" - Douglas Brinkley, the Katherine Tsanoff Brown Chair in Humanities and Professor of History at Rice University and author of American Moonshot: John F. Kennedy and the Great Space Race.

"Abraham Lincoln. Secret Societies. A deadly plot. And it all really happened! You won't be getting any sleep tonight. This book is dynamite. Meltzer does it again. History at its very best." - Brian Kilmeade, bestselling author of Sam Houston and the Alamo Avengers

"A delightful addition to popular literature on the Civil War era." - Booklist

"Meltzer and Mensch maintain suspense despite the known outcome of the story, and convincingly counter claims that Pinkerton made the whole thing up for publicity purposes. Readers new to the "Baltimore Plot" will appreciate this comprehensive and well-written overview." - Publishers Weekly

"Energetic....A brisk political thriller centered on a nefarious plot to murder Lincoln before his inauguration.... A sharply drawn episode." - Kirkus

This is how American history should be taught, with true information, interesting bits of knowledge and an empathy and understanding of Abraham Lincoln's most difficult and stressful time as the president. I was taught to revere him but I now am in awe of him and his brave deeds for our mankind and our nation. We need more of him!! Great book!!!!

Over the years, this reader has read many books about President Abraham Lincoln, yet the best one he has ever read was the recently released “The Lincoln Conspiracy” by Brad Meltzer and Josh Mensch. This is about the secret plot to kill America’s 16th president and why it failed. The research and writing were impressive. The reader goes back in time and you feel as if you are on the streets with the events unfolding. This reader also either did not know or had forgotten the role of Allan Pinkerton and his agents who foiled the plot to kill the incoming president. He and his agents infiltrated the Democrats who planned to kill Lincoln prior to his inauguration. Simply a fascinating story. There are many reflections to the political hatred between the Democrats and the Republicans then, as there are today. The Democrats then were the slave owners. The Republicans were the abolitionists. The resulting civil war was a dark period in American history and remains a topic of conversation today. Great job Brad and Josh. This is a great work of history.

If you think you know some thing about our Civil War or Abraham Lincoln , think again. The same goes for the the theory that this war was not really about slavery. This mesmerizing book opened my eyes and mind . It contains a treasure trove of historical facts and data that consumed me. I read the text of South Carolina's articles of secession and was shocked at the ugly and hateful language. I dream that this book might find its way to our school system as required reading. And maybe find its way into the minds of some of our unenlightened leaders to literally teach them about our history. It is also a helpful backdrop for those trying to understand Black Lives Matter. Congratulations Brad

This book was more interesting and engaging than I imagined it could be, and I'm already a huge Brad Meltzer fan! I learned so much and felt like I was right there with President Lincoln as his agents rescued him from the pending assassination threat. So many tidbits that I've been sharing with friends and family over the days that I never knew before I read this book, and to be honest I've never enjoyed learning history like I did while reading The Lincoln Conspiracy. If Brad taught history on school, I'd be a lot smarter when it comes to the history of our nation and such, because he's such a great story teller. You must pick up this book and add it to your library- you'll be so glad you did!
