Loveless
For fans of Love, Simon and I Wish You All the Best, a funny, honest, messy, completely relatable story of a girl who realizes that love can be found in many ways that don't involve sex or romance.
From the marvelous author of Heartstopper comes an exceptional YA novel about discovering that it's okay if you don't have sexual or romantic feelings for anyone . . . since there are plenty of other ways to find love and connection.
This is the funny, honest, messy, completely relatable story of Georgia, who doesn't understand why she can't crush and kiss and make out like her friends do. She's surrounded by the narrative that dating + sex = love. It's not until she gets to college that she discovers the A range of the LGBTQIA+ spectrum -- coming to understand herself as asexual/aromantic. Disrupting the narrative that she's been told since birth isn't easy -- there are many mistakes along the way to inviting people into a newly found articulation of an always-known part of your identity. But Georgia's determined to get her life right, with the help of (and despite the major drama of) her friends.

This is one of my 3 favorite books, ever. I have never before connected with a character or a story the way I have with this one. I have never seen myself in a story/character the way I see myself in this one. And I have never cried over a book like I have with this one. As far as I know, there is no other novel that legitimizes platonic love the way this one does. And I am so grateful for that. This book does not pull punches, and is incredibly beautiful. And it really examines the dynamics of relationships, and says "it's okay to love someone as a friend. And that doesn't mean you 'ONLY' love them as a friend. It means you love them, and that love is just as strong, pure, and powerful as any romantic love."

There's something both terrifying and liberating about finding a character that so closely mirrors some of your own life experiences. I'm aroace, and I made some of the same mistakes, had the same feelings, and came to some of the same realizations as Georgia...but at the time I didn't have resources. This book has the potential to be a great resource because it approaches things from the human perspective, allowing the reader to experience an organic, gradual flow of new information instead of subjecting them to an overwhelming barrage of definitions. That kind of easily digestible representation is worth so much, not only to people who may be trying to understand their own identities, but for family, friends, and partners who may have a hard time understanding their loved ones. Alice's writing is engaging and compelling, drawing you into the world she created and making you care about these characters. Each one has a well developed personality, character flaws included, and they seem to come alive as you work your way through the story. This is the first book I've read from this author, but it won't be the last.
