The 5 Practices of Highly Resilient People: Why Some Flourish When Others Fold
#1 international resilience expert Dr. Taryn Marie Stejskal provides practical tools to effectively address challenges, complexity, and change.
Resilience is categorically misunderstood. It's not merely about bouncing back, and it's so much more than returning to where you began. True resilient "doing" allows us to capitalize on the inescapable challenges of life and become better than we were before.
Dr. Taryn Marie Stejskal began working with brain injury patients and found that most popular beliefs about human resilience are incorrect. Since then, for the last 20 years, she has conducted qualitative research on the power of resilience, studying the science behind why some people succeed while others fail. Here, Dr. Taryn Marie outlines the five critical behaviors that define successful resilience: Vulnerability, Productive Perseverance, Connection, Gratiosity (Gratitude and Generosity), and Possibility. Resilient People bounce forward, take an active approach to facing challenges, and most importantly, they are made, not born.
Dr. Taryn Marie's empirically proven framework shows us how to develop resilience practices in our own lives-as adults, as parents, and across organizations-in a manner that allows us to be enhanced by our experiences, not diminished.

Dr. Taryn has done a masterful job of making an abstract concept approachable and understandable. Through direct writing presenting clear examples Dr. Taryn not only describes resilience, but gives you practical tools to recognize it in yourself and develop it further in your own life. She doesn't hesitate to open up about her own experiences, adding authenticity to her instruction. The 5 Practices is clearly the product of Dr. Taryn's considerable learning and life experience. As such, it is one of the few books I have found that is able to bring all that together in a way that is helpful and instructive.

The word “resilience” typically has to do with bouncing back from adversity. Dealing with – and overcoming – a rejection, a job loss, a breakup, a health issue, a financial setback, a life trauma, a death. However, in her engaging, enlightening, and enriching new book, “The 5 Practices of Highly Resilient People: Why Some People Flourish While Others Fold,” the brilliant and compassionate Dr. Taryn Marie Stejskal effectively shows us that there is so much more to it than that. Resilience is not just about recovery, but about rediscovery and rejuvenation. And it’s about seeing resilience not as a character trait, but as a practice – five practices, in fact – that we can develop and leverage…both in our personal and our professional lives. This must-read work is both a self-help book and a leadership book that will enable us to better cope with – and grow from – life’s various hurdles – large and small – not if, but when, they happen.

A groundbreaking book focused on effectively facing The 3 C’s, Challenge, Change, and Complexity that provides the blueprint to creating a more productive and positive outcome in the inevitable moments when we face adversity. Resilience isn’t additive. It’s a multiplier!

Loved it! This book offers a fresh and interesting perspective on the traditional notion of “bouncing back.” Instead, I love how the author emphasizes the concept of “bouncing forward” which is something I had never really thought of before. She skillfully transforms this concept into something that is approachable and easy to understand. By providing clear and relatable examples as well as her own personal experiences, she not only explains the idea of resilience, but gives us the tools needed to identify it within ourselves and apply it to various aspects of life, from business to home life to parenting. The insights and practical methods can be applied by anyone seeking resilience. This book is a well-researched and thought-provoking book and is a valuable resource for anyone seeking to develop their resilience and bounce forward in the face of challenges.

She did mine... or at least her wisdom, candor and insight provided the reassurance, nudge and motivation to learn that resilience is a critical skill that can be leveraged into positive momentum. It is like working out at the gym, she relates about how important it is to build our resilience muscles to face the obstacles (what ever they may be) that each of us confront. Not only are these practices great for the "big" things but you'll be surprised that by adopting them how much they empower you to also deal with the "little" things that gnaw at us bit by bit. Well written, easy to read and follow, my guess is that you will likely not be able to put it down once you start and it will take a place of importance on your shelf as well as in your own personal tool box. I'm a blow pop, btw... guess you'll have to read to find out (also she has a great presence on the social media - and generously shares here insights there... give her a follow!)
