The Complete Sherlock Holmes (Barnes & Noble Leatherbound Classic Collection)
A master of deductive reasoning who can solve the most difficult crimes by spotting obscure clues overlooked by others, dilettante sleuth Sherlock Holmes was the hero of sixty stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle between 1887 and 1927. With the help of his loyal friend, Doctor Watson, Holmes brought countless crooks, thieves, swindlers, and murderers to justice. He even rose from the dead after Doyle tried to dispatch him in his twenty-fourth adventure, and readers protested. Here, in one volume, are all four full-length novels and fifty-six short stories about the colourful adventures of Sherlock Holmes--every word Sir Arthur Conan Doyle ever wrote about Baker Street's most famous resident. Also included is an introduction by lifetime Sherlockians Barbara and Christopher Roden. The Complete Sherlock Holmes is one of Barnes & Noble's Leatherbound Classics. Each volume features authoritative texts by the world's greatest authors in an exquisitely designed bonded-leather binding, with distinctive gilt edging and a silk-ribbon bookmark. Decorative, durable, and collectible, these books offer hours of pleasure to readers young and old and are an indispensable cornerstone for every home library.

You get what you pay for. The book is beautiful as you can see in pictures from other reviews. The pages were stuck together because of the gold colouring which you need to gently pull apart. This book is absolutely beautiful. It was love at first sight when I opened it. I didn't find the text too small, but could it have been a tad bigger? Definitely. I recommend buying this book if you don't mind paying the price. You won't be sorry about your purchase.

I wanted to add to our family library/top 40 classic books of all time a detective/mystery book. There were a few excellent choices but I selected Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and bought the Barnes and Noble 2009 edition of The Complete Sherlock Holmes. Sir Aurthur Conan Doyle was an Scottish eye doctor who lived 1859-1930 and was a master story teller and INMO the creator of the best ever detective/mystery character Sherlock Holmes and sidekick/assistant Dr. Watson. Sir Aurthur Conan Doyle also wrote the epic "Lost World" and the Professor Challenger series ,and some horror and vampire stories and more. One of my favorite authors. What an imagination! All Doyle's Sherlock Holmes novels and short stories are excellent and we are told he really didn't want to write unless he put out superb quality in his characters and plots. Originally he only wanted to write at the most 3 stories about Sherlock Holmes and kill him off and write other novels but his works were greatly accepted and his publishers wanted MORE and MORE and were willing to pay Doyle more and more. His complete group of Sherlock Holmes novels and short stories collectively has been the second greatest read collection world wide of all time. Over 100 countries and many many languages these have been published in. Millions and millions published. Only the Bible has been read more! This 2009 edition by Barnes and Noble is leather bound and has a beautiful engraved front and back cover, faux gold edge paper and a gold colored place holder ribbon. Excellent quality. Its 1077 pages of great reading. Do yourself a favor, relax and slowly enjoy it. I used the stories as a mental exercise to see if I could solve the cases by the clues Doyle gives though Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. After a while you learn a little of how Sherlock's mind works in seeing the smallest clues that others find unimportant. After a few of the stories I was able to solve about 20% of the cases using the clues before 2/3s of the story was finished. Of course keep on reading the story. Just sheer enjoyment. My favorite was The Hound of the Baskervilles but ALL of the novels and short stories were 5 star. I liked that Sherlock Holmes never tried to make a big name of himself but gave Scotland Yard and other police agencies credit for the crimes he solved. Sherlock even declines knighthood and took many cases from poor people just because the case was interesting to him. Also Holmes solves some delicate international cases involving heads of state. All kinds of cases; some small and some huge in scope. Some cases he pockets huge multi thousand pound fees from some very rich and powerful people. Throughout most of Holmes 20 plus years as a private investigator , his friend Dr. Watson stays true as his best friend and helper. When Holmes was not on a case...

It is with great joy and sorrow that I have finished, at last, the reading of this amazing collection. It includes, as best I can tell, all original Sherlock Holmes canon as written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I have been a lifelong fan of Doyle’s works and in particular of his beloved detective, Sherlock Holmes. I have at various times read most of the tales of the Baker Street bloodhound but never all at once. When I saw this convenient compilation which included all of the original tales in one volume, I purchased it at once on my Kindle. What an adventure it has been! If you have made it this far, the quintessential question you are trying to answer is “Why should I want to read this?” I offer several arguments in favor of it. Honest to the fame of its hero, the tales are witty and entertaining. They are often very surprising. Taken as a whole, they are also very educational to both literature and history buffs. The reader need not fear being lost in a mass of unmanageable text either; the format of this collection makes it very easy to navigate. Most importantly, Sherlock Holmes is one of the most famous characters in all of English literature. He has become the archetype of the brilliant detective – how many movies, television shows have you watched that either starred a version of Holmes or were about characters in no small part inspired by his adventures? Go back to where it began. Go back to a different time, a different era. Go see the world as Sherlock saw it. See it through the eyes of his dear friend Watson who, if you do but a little research, bares a suspicious resemblance to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle himself. If you are a fan of crime fiction, want to be entertained and are a fan of affordable entertainment (I paid $6.99 for this collection on my Kindle), the truth of what you must do is clear. Click buy. As Sherlock might say, “Come, reader, come! The game is afoot.” A few key points jump out at me that may interest both new readers and longtime Holmes fans alike. Some of these observations regard the works in general while others pertain to this collection specifically. First of all, readers will quickly find upon their arrival at 221B Baker Street that the wit and circumstances of the characters in these tales are very fresh even 100 years after their chronological end. Not as graphic perhaps as modern crime genre demands, the heroes and villains who work with and against Holmes and his friend Watson certainly are believable. They are motivated by the same things that motivate people today – greed, lust, revenge, loss, fear and loathing to name a few. While some of the circumstances may seem farcical to the more cynical readers of today, certainly in the times they were written they fit perfectly into the general assumptions about crime. While some of the tales are more predictable than others, more than a ...
