That this book is based on a true story is outstanding. Sad but grand. Would like to know more of the history of that era

Was this a historical novel, Feminist or Black History, or a Romance novel? The author doesn't define the characters or NYC or the culture of racism, bigotry, misogyny, and oppression of women by men . I found this story lacked an emotional connection to Mrs. Elias and minimized the lives of girls/ children/ young women living on the edge of acceptable society.

Hannah or Bessie was an interesting woman. But, I would not call her a hero. She lived the life she was given, played the cards she was dealt. The story was at times tedious.

A sensational novel based upon a famous turn of the 20th century court case involving members of New York high society and finance. The main character, Hannah Elias and her story is lyrically drawn by the author's considerable skill and research. Chase-Riboud creates a complex and sympathetic portrait of a true life character of indomitable will and determination to rise above her station to great success.

A great story! It just shows you that no matter where you come from you can ALWAYS make a better life for one's self. If the haters will let you have that chance! Loved how strong Bessie/Hannah was portrayed.
