My 5 star review is purely based on my copy alone and I highly suggest looking at other's reviews before making your purchase. I was nervous about the purchase because it is a rather expensive version of lotr and I had read several reviews on here as well as some elsewhere and saw that many people have had QC issues and/or damage upon arrival. I knew this going in and simply decided that I would return any damaged or defected copy I may recieve and try again. The first one I received was perfect in appearance. I can see no issues or defects regarding my copy as it stands and it is as beautiful as I would have hoped. If you REALLY want this edition of the book, I recommend doing exactly what I had planned to. The whole reason I'm writing this review is to show that there are good copies to be had!

I have other special editions that include the appendices. The illustrations, Tolkien's extras, and its presentation make this by far one of my favorites in my collection. The book stands out on the shelf and will be the version I use to read to my kids as they get older.

If you are a fan of JRR Tolkien and a fan of collecting books, this edition is definitely something worth having. I personally think the $250 price is a bit over the top, but if you can get it on sale it is worth it. All of the extra little details added make opening it exciting each time. The text is larger than I expected and the pages aren't flimsy either. A lot of care went into this book and it is easily one of my new favorite possessions.

I cannot express how hard it is not to refer to this book as my precious. This thing is absolutely beautiful and worth every single penny and then some. Upon opening the book it is easy to feel and see the quality of craftsmanship that went into this book. The pages are hefty and the print is beautifully vibrant. The included maps and extras are just icing on the cake. This book truly is a masterpiece to match the masterpiece of the story contained within its pages.
