Girls Like Girls

Trailblazing pop star, actor and director, Hayley Kiyoko debuts her first novel, a coming-of-age romance based on her breakthrough hit song and viral video, GIRLS LIKE GIRLS.

It's summertime and 17-year-old Coley has found herself alone, again. Forced to move to rural Oregon after just losing her mother, she is in no position to risk her already fragile heart. But when she meets Sonya, the attraction is immediate.

Coley worries she isn't worthy of love. Up until now, everyone she's loved has left her. And Sonya's never been with a girl before. What if she's too afraid to show up for Coley? What if by opening her heart, Coley's risking it all?

They both realize that when things are pushed down, and feelings are forced to shrivel away, Coley and Sonya will be the ones to shrink. It's not until they accept the love they fear and deserve most, that suddenly the song makes sense.

Based on the billboard-charting smash hit song and viral music video GIRLS LIKE GIRLS, Hayley Kiyoko's debut novel is about embracing your truth and realizing we are all worthy of being loved back.

Hayley’s song turned book is an empowering and affirming glimpse into what it is like to be a teenager discovering their sexuality. The song got me through my teenage years and I love getting to read a book version of an iconic and culture shifting music video. I hope this becomes a best seller!

I seriously could not put the book down. I wish so bad that this type of book had been around when I was younger so I could've made better sense of the feelings I was having as a young girl. The only thing I wish is that the story was a bit longer so we could know how Sonya's friends and family felt about the relationship and how their relationship was navigated afterwards. Thank you Hayley. You are truly an inspiration!

As a fan of Hayley, it was a no-brainer for me to make this purchase. It is a time piece that lines up pretty well with me as an adult in their 30s. The main characters were relatable and I truly believe that this novel will be useful for any queer youth who is just trying to understand who they are and know that their feelings are valid. I really couldn't put this book down from start to finish. Love is love!

This is such a wonderful book. It jerks your heart back and forth and really touches on how it feels to discover love in a way you never thought possible. It really brought me back to high school and reminded me of those feelings of falling in love for the first time. It was sweet, but also messy, confusing, and complicated. Hayley captured those feelings perfectly. I also loved the references to her music and how it brought in elements from the Girls Like Girls music video. Now I have to go watch the music video again. I love this story so much. Thank you for writing a story that makes me feel seen. ❤

OK, so here's the deal. I don't write reviews of novels that I don't love. I feel like every author has put themselves out there and probably poured their heart and soul into their writing, and they don't need yet another rando being cruel and snarky and critical in an internet review. Non-fiction, that's another story. I will write, (and have) written three star (or worse) reviews. But fiction? I only write five star reviews. And not very often. This is one of those reviews. I love this book. It is flawlessly executed. Not a single grammatical error or typo or sentence that rings false. Incredible. The dialog is so real! Like, so incredibly real! And so engaging! I've not found many authors who can pull off dialog this good! And the online exchanges and entires, same. And the different characters voices? So different, so real, so believable, so vivid, so on point! I've kind of been on a sapphic romance streak recently, if I'm being honest. LOL! I've read a lot of books with sexual tension and romance and great dialog and intense honesty and emotion. And the early scenes between Coley and Sonya grabbed me as much as, or more than, any of those books. Wow are they good, those interactions, those scenes. And not an easy thing to pull off with a character like Coley, who has so much going on under the surface. Frankly, it's bloody brilliant! I am so impressed! It's real and beautiful and messy and I couldn't put it down. Hayley Kiyoko is one of my favorite artists. I love her music. Like, love love love it. And I pre-ordered this book the instant I found out about it just because of that. Like, what? Hayley Kiyoko wrote a book? SIGN ME UP!!! But I wouldn't be writing a review of this book if it were anything less than great. But it is great. It's really really good. It won't be to everyone's taste, of course. I mean, you'll know really quick, though. Read the excerpt of the kindle version and you'll know. It starts out in Coley's voice, her narration. And her voice grabbed me right away. I was like, wow, this is really good writing! But you might find it annoying, and if so, maybe you're not of the right generation to read this book. (I mean, to be honest, I'm not of the right generation either, in terms of my calendar age, but I'm a teen girl at heart, so, you know, I love this stuff). Way to go Hayley Kiyoko! Love this book! Thank you, Hayley, for writing it, and braving all the jerks who will say a bunch of annoying stuff because (gasp) a singer is writing a book! (How dare they?!?) After reading this book, I think it's just as apt to say that a writer had started out as an incredible singer and song writer, because Hayley Kiyoko is for sure a writer, because . . . damn she can write!
