My Own Magic: A Reappearing Act

Despite what appeared to be a glamorous existence full of globetrotting adventures, behind the scenes, Anna Kloots felt invisible in her own life. Consumed by a marriage that left no space for her own desires, she chose to reframe the failure of her marriage as an opportunity to begin again. Now, for every woman searching for her voice, Anna shares her story of starting over by trusting the magic that was always within.

It was Anna Kloots's innate sense of adventure and love for the unknown that led her to move abroad, travel to eighty countries around the world, start a business, and marry a magician, all before her midtwenties. From the outside, her jet-setting lifestyle alongside her husband looked perfect. But as she explored deeper, and let each destination challenge, change, and shape her, Anna began to realize that perfection was just another illusion.

Though she appeared to have all the freedom in the world, in reality, she was trapped inside a box, slowly disappearing. When her marriage ended, Anna decided to use her unhappy ending as a chance for a new beginning.

Following Anna's extensive travels from the bustling streets of Jaipur to the canals of Venice to the desert of Dubai, My Own Magic is a true, coming-of-age story about a woman rediscovering the magic that was always inside her. Anna's memoir is proof that travel can transform you, inspire you, and even save you.

I follow Anna on Instagram and have been a fan since 2020. I enjoyed the first half of the book but as the book progressed, it was more of the same (Anna processing her unhealthy relationship). I expected this book to be more inspirational, hopeful, empowering, but it read like a journal entry of processing emotions and became repetitious. I wouldn't recommend it. I was bored by the end. I was hoping to share it with girlfriends, but sadly they'd be disappointed too.
Loved reading Anna’s full history to transform into a confident, empowering version of herself. Anna writes beautiful and difficult moments of transformation as she finds herself not through her marriage, but through the love of adventure and travel. I greatly appreciate her transparency and openness through her journey. This is truly for anyone who experienced heartache and still found themselves along the way. Served as a magical reminder to be true to who you are! I plan to share this book with others!

I really wanted to like this book. Author seems like a nice enough person and I don’t doubt her sincerity in discussing the heartbreak she experienced, but the the drama surrounding her relationship and divorce is the weakest part of the book. Her travel experiences are much more interesting. I think it would have been better to discuss those adventures more in depth, without the underlying passive aggression toward her ex thrown in as an annoying distraction. She demonstrates a true sense of adventure and bold desire to visit all parts of the world—and she isn’t afraid to travel alone. I think concentrating on that story would have been more valuable to the reader. She does meticulous research and uncovers the most interesting parts of every country she visits. I think a travel guide would better suit her talent. The rest just reads like a bad romance novel. Ironically, I think I heard it was the publisher who convinced her to add the personal relationship details—bad idea from the publisher.

I really wanted to like this unfortunately it was a big disappointment. I am well traveled and had hard times in my 20's as well - don't we all. In my opinion this story did not warrant a book. I was waiting for the moment I was hooked and it never came. The writing was poor and the stories not captivating whatsoever.
