Pain: A Love Story
When you're in pain, your first thought is to look for a physical cause. But what happens when all tests come back negative and every intervention tried doesn't work-where do you turn for an answer and relief? In Pain: A Love Story, Serena Sterling, PsyD explores how repressed emotions can manifest into physical and emotional pain, even acute and chronic illness. Dr. Sterling investigates the development of her own juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, a physical response to the pressures placed on her by a high-performing family. Woven into her personal story are case studies, clients who have also developed painful symptoms that defy standard treatment. By understanding the uncovered thoughts, feelings, and beliefs they felt unsafe to have, many of these clients were able to identify their trapped emotions, which developed into pain, and heal. With vulnerability and honesty, Dr. Sterling explores why we repress our emotions, how our relationships can harm and heal us, and how being heard and seen is the most powerful antidote to pain. If you have pain or a medically unexplained symptom that just won't go away and you recognize that you have a history of pretending things are OK; if you tend to put the needs of others before your own; if you come from a family where feelings were taboo; if you often feel like your true feelings are a burden to others, then your pain might be rooted in repressed emotions. And this book is for you.

I am glad that I discovered “Pain: A Love Story,” by Dr. Serena Sterling because it is an interesting book with valuable insights. My takeaway from it is how the power of genuinely connecting with ourselves and others or the lack thereof impacts pain in a myriad of ways. From my perspective, genuinely connecting goes beyond the emotion of love, which is why it requires work but yields enormous benefits. I recommend this book because if you are like me, seeking to get away from living with chronic pain, this book will illuminate the path to decreasing or completely eliminating it.

It was a pretty forgettable read if you've been exposed to other books that talk about the intelligence of the body. There are better books on the subject. If you're serious about this, try Inna Segal.

I learned the lesson of pain from an emotional event. Luckily I had the alternative healers in my life to help me through it. Dr. Sterling's book is a beacon of light to those suffering with chronic pain or other health issues to see they can explore where in life the emotion got stuck and start to heal. She's honest and forthright. The path to healing is an ongoing journey. Her words could be mine and I was struck by the similarity. My favorite part was the quote of the special of the day. This book is a must read that's helped me feel less alone on my journey and given me ideas to continue healing.
