* "In a feat worthy of his heroic subjects, Riordan crafts a sequel stronger than his compelling debut."
―Publishers Weekly (starred review)New York Times best-selling series by an author beloved the world overMakes Greek mythology relevant and fun for modern readersUseful for classroom discussions Features a main character with learning differencesAn exciting adventure quest full of monsters and godsIdeal for middle schoolers but can be enjoyed by older readers, tooAdapted into a feature filmSoon to be a series on Disney+After a summer spent trying to prevent a catastrophic war among the Greek gods, Percy Jackson finds his seventh-grade school year unnervingly quiet. His biggest problem is dealing with his new friend, Tyson―a six-foot-three, mentally challenged homeless kid who follows Percy everywhere, making it hard for Percy to have any "normal" friends.

But things don't stay quiet for long. Percy soon discovers there is trouble at Camp Half-Blood: the magical borders that protect Half-Blood Hill have been poisoned by a mysterious enemy, and the only safe haven for demigods is on the verge of being overrun by mythological monsters.
To save the camp, Percy needs the help of his best friend, Grover, who has been taken prisoner by the Cyclops Polyphemus on an island somewhere in the Sea of Monsters, the dangerous waters Greek heroes have sailed for millennia―only today, the Sea of Monsters goes by a new name…the Bermuda Triangle.

Now Percy and his friends―Grover, Annabeth, and Tyson―must retrieve the Golden Fleece from the Island of the Cyclopes by the end of the summer or Camp Half-Blood will be destroyed. But first, Percy will learn a stunning new secret about his family―one that makes him question whether being claimed as Poseidon's son is an honor or simply a cruel joke.

My 14-year-old granddaughter is in love with this series. Her parents are religious and protective so I am aware that this is approved by them. I have noticed my granddaughter has an excellent vocabulary , Is very imaginative and quite a good writer herself. I believe these books have helped her.

This is probably the only series that can bring adventure, emotion, suspense at every corner, and still be totally funny. It's rare that I laugh while reading books, but this one managed to make me crack up. All the things that happen, such as the tyson thing, and intense battles with Greek monsters made me wanna lay down in my bed and read all day long. And there is never a calm moment where everything seems to be dragging on, like Percy is a normal kid, that everything's perfect again. Once it seems like a happy ending, another action scene comes in and pulls you back in. I like how they put stuff that happened in mythology, such as Polyphemus and his sworn enemy, Nobody, (long story) and turn it into a bit of fiction, sort of like a continuation.

It took me a while to pick up the second book of this series because even though the story was good, it wreaked of Harry Potter and I had just finished rereading those books. I read book 2 of this series this weekend and was so happy! This story is leaps and bounds better than book 1. And while the similarities between HP and PJ are still very evident, the story was so good that it didn't seem to bother me. I loved the location of the Sea of Monsters. The way Riordan fit the mythology into the currant world was just flawless. I have to admit that I do have a small gripe. It seemed that the journey to the golden fleece and obtaining the golden fleece was just a bit too easy. There wasn't much conflict. It was still a fantastic read though. The end left us on a bit of a cliff hanger/surprise and that alone made me order book 3 as soon as I was done. Can't wait to get it!

Percy Jackson is my guy! I love the clever way Rick Riordan makes the ancient Greek myths come alive. The stories are fresh and exciting, with terrific characters that are incredibly fun to follow on their adventures. Percy is a sort of modern day Holden from Catcher in the Rye, kicked out of too many schools to count. His life takes a dramatic turn when he finds out the truth of his parentage and gets involved in the hero business. Book one is a fast paced introduction to Percy, his friends and enemies. Book two is just as delightful as the original, and the plot twists will keep you guessing until the last page! My seven year old mythology nut and my ten year old who never got into the HP craze both loved The Lightning Thief and The Sea of Monsters. My daughter actually read the second book all the way through in a single sitting! It's that enthralling. The reading level is probably about 5th grade, with kids who know Greek mythology having a decided advantage in understanding the subtle jokes and foreshadowing. The stories contain magic, violence, and oblique reference to the extramarital sex lives of the gods and goddesses.

Percy and friends do it again. They go on an adventure/quest where the stakes are high and take us along with them. Mr. Riordan weaves mythology into the story so effortlessly that you keep reading wondering what comes next. This book was good, clean fun and great for YA audiences.
