This book is divided into five parts, with 16 chapters, and a total of about 305 pages. In the Introduction Dr. Amen discusses the recent dramatic increase in the rates of depression and anxiety in the U.S. He mentions his “30-Day Happiness Challenge”, and that on average people that tried this challenge were able to increase their happiness score on the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire by 22%. In Chapter 1, Dr. Amen addresses eleven different myths or “lies” about happiness, and then introduces his “seven secrets to happiness” that he will go into more detail about later in the book. In Part 1 focuses on brain types and how they relate to happiness. Dr. Amen goes over the anatomy of the brain, the limbic system, and the categories or “brain types” he identified after analyzing 200,000 brain SPECT scans and millions of questionnaires. The chapters in this section discuss the specific strategies for finding happiness with each brain type. Part 2 goes into more detail about the biology of the brain, and also covers the foods, vitamins, and supplements that can improve brain function. Part 3 deals with the psychology of happiness. In this section Dr. Amen describes techniques and practices that can help avoid common causes of depression and negativity. He discusses the importance of gaining distance from the noise in your head, and offers suggestions about how to practice a more positive mindset. Here in Chapter 13 he includes nine exercises he calls “positivity bias training”, which include training yourself to live in the present moment, and finding fun and laughter in your life. The last two parts of the book cover social connections and spirituality. Here Dr. amen goes into more detail about the importance of healthy relationships, and the benefits of identifying your purpose and goals. Overall, I found this book to be both informative and motivational. Dr. Amen includes information about neuroscience and biology, but also gives advice about specific steps to take to work toward becoming a happier person. He includes specific case studies, data from surveys and studies of different cultures around the world, and many different images of actual scans of brains to illustrate his points. Each chapter also has extensive notes and citations, with links in case you are interested in following up on some of the technical papers he refers to. I actually learned quite a bit from reading some of these research papers too, and I'd have to say that I am very HAPPY with this purchase. :)
