A Game of Retribution (Hades Saga, 2)

Become enchanted by the fantasy world of gods and mortals in bestselling author Scarlett St. Clair's reimagined New Greece. Readers are "hopelessly addicted" to the story of Hades and Persephone.

Hades, God of the Dead, does not take sides or bend the rules. He makes no exceptions to these values―not for god or mortal, even his lover, Persephone, Goddess of Spring.

Usually, fear prevents retaliation.

But not this time.

When Hera, Goddess of Women, approaches Hades with a plan to overthrow Zeus, he declines to offer help. As punishment, Hera sentences Hades to perform a series of labors. Between killing mythical monsters and recovering deadly stolen artifacts, each feat seems more impossible than the last and draws his attention away from Persephone―whose own tragedy has left her questioning whether she can be Queen of the Underworld.

Can Hades maintain the balance he craves?

I have this entire series (A Touch and A Game) to thank for reigniting my love of reading. It had been too long since I stayed up until 3am for just "one more chapter." A Game of Retribution was no different. It brought back all the emotions I had while reading A Touch of Ruin and then some. I cannot recommend this book or this author enough!!! (Also, go read King of Battle and Blood!!) On the other hand, I was very upset that my order from Amazon and the replacement I received had printing errors with the margins. But not to worry, I ordered the ebook in the meantime while all of that gets sorted out. I just could not wait to read this next installment! Anything for Daddy Death. LOL

I was anxious to receive this book because I knew Amazon had an issue with misprints on paperback preorders. With that being a seller issue and not an author issue, I don’t feel like it should effect the overall review of the book; however, I received mine with no printing issues other than the map being squished in the center of the pages, but I’m okay with that as I bought this book for the story, not the frills. I’m only onto chapter five so far but omg I am once again HOOKED into this story!! I cannot express how much I love Scarlett’s writing and this series. Every book I’ve read so far has had me on the edge of my seat. Excited to see what she comes up with next!

Scarlett has done it again! This installment to the series is perfection and I’m so impressed by how she’s able to weave both characters points of view in each book that keeps to the same story, but has amazing side stories that correlate as well. You can truly feel the characters emotions, especially Hades whirlwind of emotions. This book is hard to put down and is amazing for fans of Hades and Persephone story retellings! Can’t wait for the next book to come out already!

Points > Paragraphs Overall 5 Spice 5 (due to gratuitous amount) • Modern Hades Persephone Retelling • Book 2 of Hades POV • Unfinished series • SPICY AF • Subtle Nods to so many great Greek myths • Fast paced • Needed a recap in the prologue • Hecate is amazing (as always) • Zofi Backstory • Miscommunication/lack of communication • Check trigger warnings I love this series! the Persephone POVs were amazing and seeing the inner working of Hades adds SO much to this series. I do wish we had a quick recap in the beginning. I'm noticing this trend with a few authors who also do companion series, like this one, alongside their main series. I find the use of recaps extremely beneficial to the reader and it would have helped a lot in this series. This book was also heavier on the spice than the Persephone POV almost to an overly gratuitous level, so do be prepared. As a typical male, Hades is thinking about spice just as much as engaging in it. Once again Scarlett St Clair has done a great job of creating a fantasy world that you are sad to leave when the last page flips.

“I would’ve chosen you a thousand times over, the Fates be damned.” A Touch of Ruin from Hades POV & it was just what I needed. I missed Hades and loved experiencing a story I already loved so much through his lense, but with SO MUCH MORE. Scarlett pulls the curtain back and gives us insight to the inner workings of the broody enigma we love so dearly. I can’t get enough of Hades & Persephone and this one brings the HEAT and HEART. Reading time: devoured in just under 4 hours! 🔥 Rating: 5/5 Spiceometer: 🌶 🌶 🌶
