Editorial Reviews
In this provocative prequel to the School for Good and Evil series, Chainani expands on the world's mythos by returning to the institution's earliest days. While this tale is enriched by previous series knowledge, and fans will enjoy watching the narrative foreshadow events to come, it is still accessible to newcomers. An episodic, adventurous fantasy offering. - Publishers Weekly

I feel like this could be read before or after reading the other books in this series. It’s actually kinda cool reading before so you get a little more backstory.

When I requested this from NetGalley, I didn’t realize there were seven books in the series and this is a prequel. Technically I guess it could be read as a standalone, but I’d have preferred to read the other books first to fully understand this world. Other reviews I’ve seen also recommend it. Twin brothers Rafal and Rhian are headmasters for evil and good sections respectively at a prestigious boarding school where heroes and vilains are trained and taught. They also watch over the Endless Woods. As long as the twins love each other, good and evil are in balance. Previous students of the school are recognizable names – Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Snow White – but this prequel features Aladdin and Captain Hook (James). The school masters are certain Aladdin is destined for Rafal’s school of evil, but when he’s dropped off at Rhian’s school of good, their world goes askew and the adventure begins. The brothers’ relationship is challenged when feelings of betrayal, jealousy, and mistrust enter the equation. Add in a competition, pirates, and a bungled genie-granted wish, and you have a fun MG read. Although I enjoyed this book, I know I’d have appreciated it more if I’d read the others in the series, and it looks like a Netflix movie is coming. I know I’ll be watching. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I had high expectations for this and while it was good.....there were just things that irked me. I thought we would get to the origins of the School itself, but we start after the Storian already picked the twins. We do get to see the origins of The Circus, The Trials, the 2 seperate castles and the swan crest which was interesting! I'm amazed they even kept some of those things after what happened, actually lol But on the down side it seemed Rhion was ridiculously easy to manipulate, to the point he seemed stupid. They also RUINED Aladdin for me, who is one of my favorite characters😭 I thought the Sadars were good too and now....idk, I'm confused 😅 And the Pen didn't help, pitching the brothers against each other. I actually liked Rafal in this one and pitied him.....its insane what he becomes later. So yeah, not what I expected but still pretty good! I know a lot of people will love this 🙂
