The Comfortable Kitchen: 105 Laid-Back, Healthy, and Wholesome Recipes (A Defined Dish Book)

It's comfort food-redefined! Here are healthy meals the whole family can enjoy, night after night . . .

What does comfort mean in The Comfortable Kitchen? For Alex Snodgrass, New York Times bestselling author of The Defined Dish, bringing her family around the table to share a home-cooked meal is a favorite way to show love. Her recipes are designed to bring joy into that display of affection, from your own comfort cooking to your loved ones' delight at the delicious flavors, to knowing that you're caring for your family's nutrition with each bite.

Though many of her meals are fully paleo compliant, or at the very least paleo-ish, there are plenty of other recipes with simple, flexible ingredient swaps for a cleaner meal when desired-perfect for people who are enjoying their "food freedom" stage of their health journey. And for those who have dietary restrictions, Alex clearly marks each recipe as gluten-free, dairy-free, grain-free, and paleo, as appropriate.

Alex brings back the joy of being in the kitchen for those at all levels of cooking skill and provides food for every occasion, with soups, salads, pasta, vegetarian and non-vegetarian mains, apps, and sides ranging from one-pot meals to not-so-junky junk food--and even cocktails and desserts--with recipes including:

I’ve been following Alex and the Defined Dish blog for years and have made many of her recipes which never disappoint! This cookbook is beautifully done. I can’t wait to try one of these healthy but comforting family friendly recipes soon. First up, the Vietnamese shaking beef salad!

I have the first cookbook Alex wrote and absolutely love it. I’ve gifted it to many people. When this one arrived I did not get the same level of excitement from it. Many of the recipes contain expensive cuts of steak or what seems to be more of an unusual ingredient. My biggest issue is the photos. I’m not sure if it’s just my copy but many of the pictures are hard to decipher, and almost all of the labels on the recipes are blurry. I’m not sure if this was done on purpose to give it a certain aesthetic but it gives me a headache. Some of the pages also have some water marks or distressing on them. Overall, I think I’ll find some absolute winners in this cookbook so I’ll keep it.

I just received The Comfortable Kitchen after preordering it months ago and spent the last couple of hours reading Alex’s new book cover to cover (with the Spotify playlist on) and I LOVE it. I am obsessed with cookbooks and cooking. I read them as a hobby. I love making new recipes. I’m Italian. Etc. And I cannot wait to cook from this cookbook!! Recipes, photos, and stories make a cookbook great for me and this one has it all. Also love the photos in this book and how many family pics there are. It just makes it feel homey to me. I was already a big fan of Alex’s and love her first book so much, too. I also went through this new book and made a list on my phone of the Whole30 recipes I want to make for a January whole30 next week. I’m glad your publisher picked this date to release!! Also I cried when I saw Sutton and Winnie on the dedication page and while reading it I kept thinking about Alex’s journey and how far she has come from when she used to share the blog with her sister etc and now have an empire with 2 cookbooks and over 600k followers! Love everything about her!!
LOL
I have to admit that I am a huge fan of Defined Dish. I was born and raised in TX too and Alex’s cooking makes me feel home. Most people don’t realize that Texas is a melting pot of different cultures and Alex’s recipes reflect a broad spectrum of flavors. More importantly, she cooks like I like to cook. Whole food, healthy or healthyish recipes with a splurge for special occasions. Anyone can make these recipes. I loved her first book, but this one adds things like cocktails and sweets for the days that you want something special. I will use this one a lot. Keep up the great food, Alex!
