The Plant-Based Athlete: A Game-Changing Approach to Peak Performance

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

The only research-based guide for connecting a plant-based diet with peak athletic performance, featuring interviews with professional athletes who've made the switch from meat to plants.

The Plant-Based Athlete by Matt Frazier and Robert Cheeke reveals the incontrovertible proof that the human body does not need meat, eggs, or dairy to be strong. Instead, research shows that a consciously calibrated plant-based diet offers the greatest possible recovery times, cell oxidation, injury prevention, and restorative sleep, and allows athletes to train more effectively, with better results.

However, committing to a plant-based diet as an elite athlete, first-time marathoner, or weekend warrior isn't as simple as swapping vegetables for meat. Even the slightest food adjustments can impact performance. That's why Matt Frazier, founder of No Meat Athlete, and Robert Cheeke, founder of Vegan Bodybuilding, wrote this groundbreaking book, to guide those interested in making this important shift in how to do so with the best, most transformative results.

The Plant-Based Athlete offers readers:

As a vegan who does sports, I was curious, but this book is all about convincing that vegans can be athletes and I know that already - thank you. now move on... but it doesn't - it gives one fact about nutrition and then goes with pages after pages with the history of vegan athletes to prove that point. Way too difficult to find relevant content. I couldn't finish it.

This book is mini biographies of pro athletes interspersed with light science on how a plant based diet can improve performance. I was excited for the book’s release but found the content to be light for someone that is already plant based. Perhaps this will tip someone over the edge to try a plant based diet but it’s not written for a plant based athlete. There are a few plan and program templates available on an external website and the back has some decent recipes.

I think this book is perfect for either new vegans or new athletes. I had studied vegan nutrition for years to make sure I was eating a balanced diet, but when I started running, I realized I had different needs. It's not easy to find that specific information online (or should I say there's a lot of information, sometimes too much to go through - pre-workout, post-recovery, etc.). I have read other books by vegan athletes, and while they're great, some of them can be a bit complicated to follow when you don't have more than 15 minutes to get a meal ready. This book has a bit of everything to get a new vegan or a new athlete going on their journey. I really like the day-in-the-life section because it shows there are many different ways to be a plant-based athlete. And many of the recipes look simple enough for weekdays, so I look forward to trying them.

I'm impressed with this book. I'm a health coach, athlete and wife to a husband battling melanoma. We've read How Not to Die by Dr. Greger (provides Foreword) and found this book filled with both data and anecdotal profiles of plant based athletes. It's well-written, easy to follow and well laid out. I've read some other reviews that complain about the scientific rigor or issues with protein calculators but I just didn't find any of that to be a thing when I was reading the book. It's a wonderful guide chock full of useful and tangible information; and recipes that I'll actually make. I'm not vegan, paleo, mediterranean, keto, vegetarian, nutritarian, flexitarian... I just try to eat a plant-forward, plant based diet. There's no ideology attached to my preferences. I just feel like I'm firing on all cylinders when I eat plant-based. The author has a blog, daily emails, a FB community, an IG community and so many resources that it's a no-brainer to pick up a copy, dog ear the pages I like and return again and again to its useful chapters.
